Match Report

Shelbourne crowned WNL champions

Shelbourne is the Women's National League champions for the second year running following a performance that saw them score four past Wexford Youths en route to retaining the title.

The Reds rose to the occasion and dealt the Youths a hammer blow with a goal just before half time followed by three second-half strikes from Alex Kavanagh, Megan Smyth Lynch, and player of the match Abbi Larkin that ensured the title remains in the capital this winter.

Wexford had massive sights on securing the title at home but those dreams turned into an unmitigated nightmare as their rivals take the trophy home and out of their sights.

The home side had the best of the opening exchanges as Ciara Rossiter sent in a deep cross to the back post and Jess Lawler was just beaten in the air as she tried to head it goalwards but her effort went wide.

Shelbourne then had a glorious chance to open the scoring, as a cross sent in by Jessica Gargan was nearly met at the back post by Abbie Larkin and Megan Smyth Lynch but neither could make the vital contact.

Ciara Rossiter has the best chance for Youths to score for the home side as she latched onto a fantastic cross from Kylie Murphy in the area but her effort just went over the bar.

Jessie Stapleton was to break the deadlock for the away side as just on the stroke of halftime Shelbourne were to score. Maeve Williams pulled off a fantastic stop to deny the initial shot but Stapleton was on hand to pick up the second ball to round the keeper and slot it home from a tight angle.

Shelbourne extended their lead as Alex Kavanagh flicked the ball past Williams following a perfect pass and cross from Abbi Larkin to give Shelbourne another massive step toward title retention.

They were to seal the tie and the title as Megan Smyth Lynch scored as she saw the run and cross from Abbi Larkin out on the right and the Shels forward unmarked struck a half volley past Williams to score the third.

They were to add a fourth just sixty seconds later as Abbi Larkin picked up a pinpoint cross from Megan Smyth Lynch and despite riding out a tackle she did excellently to chip it past Williams to score Shelboures fourth.

It takes a good team to win a league but it takes a great team to retain it, if they are to be a team of the ages Noel King will now have to plot the three in a row.
