Match Report
Noonan and Keenan deliver for Shels in Wexford
Goals from Saoirse Noonan and Keeve Keenan meant it was the Dubs who take the three points home after a feisty affair in the South East.
They exploded out of the blocks with some brilliant passing and touches from the likes of Jessie Stapleton and Noelle Murray. It was the former who had the first shot of the game putting a header wide.
Former Cork City woman Noonan opened the scoring after just five minutes, stealing on the end of a through ball and slotting past Maeve Williams in the Wexford goal.
Then a moment of controversy as Keenan unleashed a rocket of a shot that cannoned off the crossbar. Williams cleared but the linesman signalled that the ball had crossed the line. He appeared to be the only person in the ground who thought so and replays don’t seem to back him up.
Wexford were enraged with the decision and it seemed to spark some life into them. However they couldn’t turn good possession into attacks with the final ball letting them down again and again.
Della Doherty was the best player in black tonight. Her header was the best chance of the game for the homeside but she couldn’t keep it under the crossbar.
Shels went into the break with a well deserved 2-0 lead with Jess Ziu, Keeva Keenan and especially Jessie Stapleton all impressing.
The second half was niggly and ill tempered. Both sides committing needless fouls as the ball became bogged down in midfield.
Noelle Murray showed off all her skills with a brilliant turn and touch to bring her away for the best chance of the second half. Her finishing wasn’t quite as good as she missed the target.
This result all but ends Wexford’s title hopes. Comprehensively beaten by Peamount and now Shels, they would need to be perfect from here on in to keep pace with the runaway top two.
For Shels, they were excellent when they wanted to be and controlled when they needed to be. An almost flawless performance that proved last week against DLR Waves was a blip. They keep the pressure on Peas and will have tougher nights in their title defence.
