Match Report

Drogs pick up big three points as UCD struggle

A quickfire first-half double and a third late on gave Drogheda United a convincing 3-1 victory over bottom-side UCD AFC at the UCD Bowl this evening.

A clever finish from Ryan Brennan put the Drogs in the lead with their first effort on target before captain Conor Keeley doubled their lead five minutes later after a fine half-volley.

Kevin Doherty’s side wrapped up the victory in the second half with Adam Foley turning from provider to goal scorer with a simple header from close range. UCD struggled to create many meaningful chances throughout bar a late consolation goal from Kinsella-Bishop as their league struggles continue.

After a positive opening few minutes from the Students, the away side gradually grew into the game and began to dominate possession. The five-man UCD defence held strong for almost 20 minutes before Ryan Brennan opened the scoresheet.

Drogheda were causing all sorts of problems for the UCD backline down the right wing and their opener came from just there. A chip over the top found Adam Foley who picked out Ryan Brennan well with a low cross to the front post. The experienced striker produced a beautiful finish with a clever flick of the ball through his legs right into the UCD net.

The early goal provided Kevin Doherty’s side with a big jolt of confidence and they smelt blood in search of a second. They didn’t have to wait very long and doubled their lead on the 25th-minute mark.

After UCD failed to properly clear a Drogheda corner, the away side worked the ball back out to the corner taker, Dayle Rooney. The winger sent a low cross back into the congested UCD box right into the path of captain Conor Keeley. The centre-back struck the ball very nicely on the half-volley, much to the delight of the travelling supporters.

The away side were very comfortable as the second half progressed. UCD struggled to get a foothold in the game and their two strikers up top in Jake Doyle and Mikey Raggett found it difficult to hold on to any forward passes out of the UCD half.

Meanwhile, Kevin Doherty’s side produced some more half-chances to keep Kian Moore on his toes in the UCD net. He was alive to a Dayle Rooney effort after a lovely through ball from Darragh Markey before Ryan Brennan almost doubled his tally with a volley that narrowly missed the target.

While UCD had a little more of the ball after the restart, the pattern of the game remained largely the same and Drogheda were comfortable for most of the second half. Plenty of substitutes also disrupted the game's flow although the away fans were delighted to welcome new signing Kyle Robinson when he took to the field midway through the second half.

If the game wasn’t beyond doubt before, Adam Foley’s 71st-minute goal secured all three points for Drogheda. Darragh Markey delivered a lovely freekick to the back post which found Adeboyega. The centre-back headed it back across goal right into the path of Foley who just needed to tap home.

UCD did manage to secure a consolation goal late on in what was their best spell of the game. Some lovely patient build-up play allowed Raggett to set Brennan down the left flank. The midfielder who spent the first half of the season at Drogheda, found Kinsella-Bishop who hammered home with a lovely finish to give the UCD fans something to cheer about.

For most of the game, however, UCD struggled to create meaningful attacks which makes their league position unsurprising. Fortunately, they take a break from league action next week as they welcome Cobh Ramblers to the Bowl in the FAI Cup First Round. Meanwhile, Drogheda host Sligo Rovers on Friday in the same competition.

  • 25'

The visitors double their lead! UCD don't fully deal with a Dayle Rooney corner and the Drogs work the ball back out to the winger who puts in another low cross which finds Drogheda captain Conor Keeley. The centre-back shows great composure to slot the ball home and UCD have a mountain to climb already.

  • 21'

Despite not testing Moore before the opener, the Drogs smell blood here and are now pushing forward in numbers. Heeney joins the action from fullback and his cross wins a corner but it comes to nothing as the referee brings a halt to the game for a clash of heads during the set-piece.

  • Despite the sun shining on Belfield here before kick off, torrential rain throughout the day will make for tricky conditions for both sides defenses with kickoff less than 10 minutes away.

  • Just one goal in the 180 minutes Drogheda have played since the departure of Freddie Draper. Today is the perfect day to rack up goals against a UCD side that have conceded 11 goals in their last 180 minutes of football.

  • Three changes to the UCD side who lost 4-0 to Shelbourne here at the Bowl last time out. Michael Gallagher and Jessie Dempsey enter the side as does UCD's new signing Eanna Clancy who has taken a scholarship at the university. Meanwhile Kevin Doherty has named an unchanged Drogheda side from the one who drew 0-0 with Shamrock Rovers last week.
