UCD produce big win in relegation battle
An excellent second half performance saw UCD come from behind to move off the bottom of the table and go two points clear of Finn Harps in their battle to avoid automatic relegation to the First Division.
Darragh Nugent gave Drogs an early lead but in the 40th minute UCD drew level through Jack Keaney. The Students produced a strong display in the second half. Dara Keane gave them the lead in the 67th minute. Both sides had chances but the Students were able to hold on for the three points.
The visitors took the lead in the fourth minute through Nugent; former Student Chris Lyons played the ball to him and he fired home.
Drogs very nearly got a second goal in the 11th minute. Nugent with a ball over the box to Dean Williams but his header was just wide. UCD began to get into the game and forced Drogs into conceding two corners in the space of three minutes.
In the 17th minute a strike from UCD’s Evan Caffrey just went wide. The game got a little scrappy as the half went on; due to the rain that fell the ball got stuck several times.
Five minutes from the break UCD were awarded a free. Caffrey’s free met the head of Keaney and he made no mistake from close range.
Minutes later Evan Osam’s effort was blocked by Dylan Grimes as the Students went looking for a second goal.
Seconds after the interval Tommy Lonergan came close for the Students. In the 63rd minute Alex Nolan forced Colin McCabe into making an excellent save. McCabe parried Donal Higgins’ shot in the 66th minute and Dane Massey cleared. One minute later UCD took the lead; Higgins passed to Keane who cut inside and shot to the net. It was no more than their second half performance deserved.
Drugs looked for an equaliser but didn’t force Kian Moore into making any real save of note. Keane had a chance in the 87th minute but he volleyed over the bar. In additional time UCD held firm as they held on for a crucial win.
