Mata header helps Rovers see off Pats
A brilliant Max Mata header was the difference between Sligo Rovers and St. Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond this afternoon.
The three points moves Sligo up to fourth, two points clear of Shels, although Damian Duff’s men have a game in hand.
Pat’s dominated the opening period, but it was the visitors who created the better chances with Will Fitzgerald and Kailin Barlow going close.
The hosts best chance of the first half came from an ambitious effort from Jason McClelland whose strike from distance flew just past the top corner.
The second half started how the first began with the hosts controlling possession, but struggling to create anything clear cut.
The game flipped on its head after 57-minutes however, when Johan Brannefalk got down the right and his cross was brilliantly met by Mata who rose like a salmon to head home.
Tim Clancy made a flurry of changes but Pat’s still struggled to break down Sligo.
Substitute Eoin Doyle was given a straight red for what looked like a poor tackle on Fitzgerald in the 90th minute. This was before referee Neil Doyle had been dishing out yellow cards for tackles and time wasting.
Pat’s best chance of the second half came right at the depth when Breslin found Mulraney at the back post, but the winger couldn’t divert his volley on target.
Sligo held on for the three points and now move onto Dundalk at home on Saturday evening, whilst for St. Pat’s they travel down to Cork on Friday evening.
