Match Report

Pat’s grab late draw with Rovers

St. Pat’s managed to dig out from their first loss of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division, as an Ian Bermingham header on injury time grabbed a late draw against Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds this evening.

Before that, Sligo seemed to have claimed all three points when Gibson changed the score from the penalty spot as himself got tackled inside the visitor’s box.

Rovers comes out as the biggest winner of the round by seeing the two closest sides sharing the spoils one week before their visit to the Richmond Park.

Matters started energetically between the third-placed outfit, and one of the leaders before kick-off; with both teams coming forward looking for an early goal.

Greg Bolger brought the first warning of the game as he cracked it slightly off the crossbar; Bermingham replied with a free header found by Matty Smith’s cross coming in from the left.

Ronan Coughlan wasted a strong chance moments after, with credit to Edward McGinty, as he saved it brilliantly. On the other side of the pitch, Romeo Parkes didn’t do better as he was incapable of finishing a face-to-face scenario with Jaros.

Chris Forrester’s juicy deliveries created several chances for the Saints to change the score; Paddy Barrett was the first beneficiary when he saw his header going off the crossbar.

The visitors managed to win yards passing the half-hour mark, although with no more chances for both clubs to take the lead before the break.

Rovers came back much more aggressive and with plenty of intentions to hurt the opponent.

With 48 minutes on the clock, the referee had no hesitation pointing to the penalty spot; Jordan Gibson, who got himself tackled inside the box, claimed the lead for Sligo.

Stephen O’Donnell’s boys came back into the second half like they had started matters, and it took 25 minutes for goalkeeper McGinty to be bothered.

Forrester’s corner found Sam Bone as the centre-back sent it just off the right post. Coughlan almost managed to score against his former team, but Ginty claimed all the attention with a brilliant save.

The game became unpredictable inside the last ten minutes with the chances for both clubs; in the last play of the game, Forrester sent in yet another perfect cross from a corner headed in by Bermingham, as he grabbed a point for the Dublin-based side and the first round of fixtures without a single loss.

  • Considering both teams performances in the league so far, it is fair to predict an enjoyable show, should the rainy weather in Sligo collaborate.

  • Pat's starting XI: Jaros, Mountney, Barrett, Desmond, Bone, Bermingham, Forrester, Lennon, Smith, King and Coughlan.

  • Sligo Rovers starting XI: McGinty (GK), Horgan, McCourt, Bolgar, Gibson, Figueira, Byrne, Mahon, Morahan, Buckley and Parkes.

  • The Saints arrive at Sligo three days after beating Longford Town 3-nil, courtesy of Ronan Coughlan and Chris Forrester’s astonishing performance with two sensational goals.

  • After the fall against Derry City (1-nil) and sharing the spoils with Drogheda (1-all) last Friday, the Reds are hoping to return to solid ground as soon as possible.

  • The recent history plays against the hosts, with just two victories in the last 15 games against Pat’s, however the high-performance levels shown at early doors in the 2021 season might well be enough to bear fruit.

  • Good afternoon and you are very welcome today’s live coverage of the meeting between Sligo Rovers and St. Patrick's Athletic at the Showgrounds, in one of the main events of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division ninth round of fixtures.
