Match Report
Sligo triumph away to Pat’s
Sligo trumped St.Pats 3-0 in Richmond Park tonight in what was an ugly but effective win for Liam Buckley’s side.
The visitors won the game in the first half where they scored both goals and their opponents failed to make use of high possession.
Ryan DeVries’ excellent strike after 10 minutes and Johnny Kenny’s close range finish after a counter attack right before the break was enough for Sligo to set up shop and see out the win. Adam McDonnell added another in injury time.
The Bit O’Red arguably needed this win more than their opponents, and certainly played like it with a gutsy display at the back to confirm European qualification.
The Dubliners were expected to control the ball but maybe not as much as they did. They also weren’t expected to be as wasteful with it as they were this evening in Inchicore.
They had an off day in front of goal, but an inspired performance from Ed McGinty in the Sligo goal and John Mahon at the back also helped keep them out.
It certainly wasn’t a bad performance from the Saints, and the upcoming FAI Cup final will be the perfect remedy for the loss. They lacked incision in the first half and left themselves vulnerable to the away teams counter attacking threat.
After the break they fixed this and became direct, but still couldn’t find the net. As for Rovers, they stuck to the task and managed the game well after taking the lead.
The nature of the first goal, where Jamie Lennon gifted the ball to the scorer Ryan DeVries, is a big moment to look back on as it set up Sligo for the exact type of game they wanted.
The sloppiness will have frustrated manager Stephen O’Donnell from his home, as he missed the game through illness. Take nothing away DeVries though, who finished with the quality he often fails to show.
From then on, Pats showed the right urgency, but it always felt like the day of the Showgrounds outfit, and they doubled in the 41st minute through starlet Johnny Kenny on the counter attack.
Despite the host’s relentless attacks, the Bit O’Red held on in scrappy fashion but remained a threat on the counter, using Andre Wright’s hold up play to their advantage. However Robbie Benson of the saints will still struggle to believe he didn’t leave Inchicore tonight with a goal.
A clinical win from Sligo and one that sees them through to Europe for another year.

St.Pats will feel frustrated as we hit the hour mark at Richmond Park. They've done everything right except the most important part. Having said that, the Bit O'Red have managed the game well thus far
A chance for the showgrounds outfit to really suckerpunch the Saints on the break again, but Kenny's attempted square ball could only find Vitezslav Jaros in the home goal. Meanwhile Pats continue their pressure down the other end
The hosts have come out a determined team. Burns heads the ball home but it's disallowed
Pats responding to the situation, bringing on Matty Smith and Billy King as half-time subs, two well renowned goal providers. They replace Ronan Coughlan and Alfie Lewis

2-0! Sligo have remained dangerous on the break and it has stood to them as Johnny Kenny taps home to give his side the second against the run of play. Pats committed too many men forward and were caught out
Big chance for the home team to equalise. That man Bermingham getting forward again and causing problems. McGinty was called into action and saved well once more
The Dubliners starting to control the possession now. Ian Bermingham is in plenty of space and looks to be a good outlet for them tonight
Good play from starlet Darragh Burns down the right side for the hosts as he forces a good save by McGinty. He's getting a fair amount of joy in that side and could be the Saints' way back into the game
The visitors defending their lead well since scoring, not forcing any attacks and taking the sting out of any attempted Pats response
Goal ! A mistake by Jamie Lennon gifted a chance to Ryan DeVries who converted brilliantly for the Bit O'Red. 1-0
An end to end tempo in the first 10 minutes here in Dublin but no big chances yet. Both sides still getting a feel for eachother
