Match Report

Rooney Punishes Nine Man Pat’s in Richmond

St. Patrick’s suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against Drogheda United this evening as The Saints squandered their chances to draw in on Shamrock Rovers in the title race.

Despite Pats dominating large spells of the game their careless passing cost them early on, Warren Davis latching on to a Joe Redmond back pass to send the visitors ahead. A trademark piece of ingenuity from Chris Forrester levelled affairs in the 40th minute, but the hosts struggled to find a breakthrough in the second half, having been reduced to ten men following a high boot from Jake Mulraney. Dayle Rooney grabbed all three points for Drogheda at the death, producing a stunning volley from a Markey cross to pull off the ultimate smash-and-grab.

The Saints looked bright in the early minutes but soon proved to be the creators of their own demise, sloppy passing at the back costing them heavily. It was captain Joe Redmond who in the 7th minute played a lethargic back pass to Dean Lyness, Warren Davis latching on instantly. Davis beat out the hapless Lyness to make it 1-0 and net the first league goal of his career.

The hosts fell victim to the same old mistakes almost instantly, as Anthony Breslin was dispossessed by Ryan Foley in the final third, Foley cutting the ball back to Davis on the edge of the box, the youngster nearly getting his second as his shot grazed Lyness’ left post.

Drogheda looked willing to soak up the pressure from Pats following the opener, The Saints looking blunt when it came to their finishing touch, Tommy Lonergan struggling in the air as he continually squandered crosses from the flanks.

It took a trademark piece of ingenuity from Chris Forrester for Pats to draw level following a string of near misses, Forrester catching the ball on the right side before deftly weaving past Evan Weir and Conor Keeley before firing into the roof of the net.

Pats enjoyed nearly all of the ball as play resumed in the second half, but still struggled to fashion any meaningful chances, the tricky dribbling of Forrester and Mulraney present throughout, but the final pass was almost always lacking, any brisk counterattacks dashed away by misguided passing.

The host’s attacking output deflated even further when Jake Mulraney lunged in with a high boot on Ryan Brennan, referee David Dunne giving Mulraney his marching orders for his second yellow of the game.

And then disaster struck-a quick break for Drogheda saw Darragh Markey tee up Dayle Rooney for a succulent volley, Rooney catching the ball sweetly and curling his effort into the top left corner, leaving fans stunned as he wheeled away to celebrate the ultimate smash-and-grab.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts just before the final whistle as Sam Curtis was shown a straight red card.

Pats will look to rebound and continue their push for European football on Friday as they travel to Tuners Cross to take on ninth-placed Cork City.

Drogheda host the Louth derby in a game that could have huge implications for either side, pressure continuing to mount on the head of Stephen O’Donnel following his side’s FAI Cup exit.

  • Jake Mulraney starts on the bench for Pats, Jon Daly opting for Jason McClelland on the wing. Dayle Rooney and Ryan Brennan are dropped for Drogheda in favour of Kyle Robinson and Warren Davis.

  • Drogheda's last match finished a 0-0 draw with Bohemians. Speaking to club media at full-time, manager Kevin Doherty praised the return of Ryan Brennan to the starting XI: Probably the pleasing thing for me tonight was Ryan coming and doing really well, upfront he was that switch and gave them [Bohemians] a fair bit of trouble. “Probably the best thing for me tonight was we trained here Wednesday, and as a player, it can be boring sometimes, stop-start, but they stuck at it, Andrew [Wogan] made some really good saves.”

  • Manager Jon Daly stressed that now was not the time for complacency whilst speaking to club media: “It's another difficult game. There's no easy games in this league. We're going to have to do our homework, as all of our energy has gone into the game against Dundalk,” he said. “It's an exciting time of the season. We knew the game against Dundalk was going to be a big three points if we could get them. We managed to do that and we're delighted with that. We've plenty of other games coming up but we're going to put all our energy into getting the win against Drogheda on Monday.”

  • The Saints rallied back strongly last week following a disastrous loss to Shelbourne at the beginning of the month, beating Dundalk out 3-1 as Tommy Longergan struck for double. Their opponents tonight have proved themselves to be prickly opponents throughout the season, the last match between the two sides ending in a 2-1 win for Drogheda.

  • Evening all and welcome to tonight's match coverage of St. Patrick's Athletic vs Drogheda United. While Drogheda look set to cruise to league safety with six games to go, it remains all to play for Pats, a win holding the potential to take them just three points shy of league leaders Shamrock Rovers.
