Forrester brace helps Pats beat Drogs

A first half brace from Chris Forrester saw St. Patrick’s Athletic extend their unbeaten run to four games and move up to fourth in the table with a hard fought win over Drogheda Utd at Weaver’s Park.

Forrester scored from the spot in the 20th minute before Dylan Grimes leveled for Drogs four minutes later. In the 34th minute Forrester got his and his side’s second goal.

Both sides had chances in the second half. Eoin Doyle sealed the win for Pat’s deep in stoppage time.

The deadlock was broken in the 20th minute. A ball from Jamie Lennon into the box was headed on by Jay McGrath and it was handled by Jarlath Jones. Referee Kevin O’Sullivan pointed to the spot and Forrester made no mistake.

Four minutes later Drogs drew level. Joe Redmond put a foot out to foul Freddie Draper, no penalty, but the ball fell nicely to Grime and he fired to the net.

In the 28th minute Drogs had a chance to take the lead. Grimes raced through but Dean Lyness pulled off a fine save to deny him. Grimes picked up the loose ball and passed to Ryan Brennan but Lyness got a vital touch.

Drogs were dealt a blow in the 34th minute when Pat’s went back in front. Jamie Lennon’s shot was blocked by Jones, it fell nicely to Forrester, he took one touch before finding the back of the net from just inside the box.

Pat’s started the second half brightly as they went in search of a third goal. In the 47th minute Forrester took a shot but McCabe saved it. In the 55th minute Gary Deegan played a neat ball to Aaron McNally but his shot was saved by Lyness.

Drogs substitute Michael Leddy had an effort that was blocked by Anto Breslin in the 72nd minute. They forced a number of corners as they pressed for an equaliser.

Pat’s substitute Eoin Doyle had a header that went wide in the 76th minute while former Drog Mark Doyle brought a save out of McCabe in the 78th minute. Eoin Doyle sealed the win for Tim Clancy’s side when he intercepted a pass from McCabe.
