Match Report

Pats comfortable in victory over Sligo

St. Patrick’s Athletic continued their hot pursuit of the league title as they took all three points against Sligo in The Showgrounds, cutting Shamrock Rovers’ league lead down to just one point.

The deadlock was broken early, Pats unleashing a blistering counter-attack in the 11th minute of the game, Jake Mulraney powering down the pitch and producing a sumptuous bit of skill to nutmeg Greg Bolger and lay the ball to Mark Doyle on the edge of the box. Doyle took the ball in his stride and was brought down from behind by Garry Buckley, referee Robert Harvey pointing to the spot instantly.

It was Chris Forrester who stepped up and converted calmly to send Luke McNicholas the wrong way and put The Saints in the driving seat.

Jon Daly’s side refused to relent from that point on, gutting Sligo in the unrelenting fashion of (potential) league champions. Mulraney squandered a chance to double his side’s advantage in the ensuing minutes, slicing an opportunity over the bar from virtually point-blank range.

The winger redeemed himself in the 35th minute, whipping a dangerous cross into the Sligo box that Johan Brannefalk failed to clear, the Swede instead heading the ball into the path of Sam Curtis. Curtis produced a neat finish to fire past McNicholas and make it two for the visitors.

As the second half got back underway the visitors were again left rueing their finishing from close range. Jake Mulraney showcased his imperious ability to drift inside and cut on to his left foot, producing a curling effort that beat McNicholas and rattled the left post. The rebound fell straight to the feet of Carty who had all the time in the world to finish but could only fire wide.

Sligo struggled to create any sizeable chances throughout much of the 90, their bright spark undoubtedly in the form of Pedro Martelo, the Portuguese forward’s movement and physicality in the box affording him a handful of half-chances. Despite the underwhelming performances from the Bit O’Red as of late, John Russel should now have a reliable goal outlet in place of Max Mata once Martelo gets used to the tempo and style of the league.

A bad day at the office for Sligo only got worse as the hosts were awarded a penalty in the dying minutes of the game following a handball in the Pats’ box. Up stepped second-half sub and club captain David Cawley, his eventual effort brazenly overhit as it veered completely wide of goal.

Sligo will attempt to carve out an encouraging end to a mediocre season next week, The Bit O’Red traveling to Oriel Park to take on Dundalk.

Jon Daly’s men now face a difficult task in keeping the momentum of their title charge alight next week as they welcome Bohemians to Richmond Park.

  • The Saints are boosted with the return of captain Joe Redmond in the starting XI following a lengthy period of time on the side line. Portuguese striker Pedro Martelo slips into the spot vacated by Max Mata as he makes his first start for The Bit O'Red this year.

  • “Our league form has been really good and we'll be aiming to continue our positive performances over the coming weeks, starting at The Showgrounds. “Sligo Rovers are always a difficult team to play against, they have some very good players and they've beaten us in both matches so far this season so hopefully we can reverse that trend.”

  • It\'s been nearly a month since Pats played their last league fixture on 7 July. Following that 1-1 draw with Cork in Richmond Park, The Saints crashed out of Europe at the hands of F91 Dudelange, progressed through the FAI Cup against Longford as well as having squared off in a friendly against Cliftonville. Speaking to club media, Jon Daly say his side are relishing their return to league action: \"We\'re looking forward to the match and to getting back to domestic action tomorrow night after a break last weekend,” Daly said.

  • “Tomorrow night we welcome an in-form St Pats side to the Showgrounds. Our previous games against them have been tight encounters so we’re expecting another difficult game. “It’s important we build on our last two home performances where we took maximum points. We are eager to try and build some momentum and with players starting to return to full fitness this will only enhance our chances.”

  • The recent departure of talisman Max Mata to Shrewsbury Town is a further blow to a Sligo side that have struggled for goals this season, the Kiwi leaving as the league's joint top scorer. Manager John Russel receives temporary respite with Fabrice Hartman returning to the Bit O'Red on loan from RB Leipzig, the German forward expected to add a more cutting edge element to Sligo's attack: “I was delighted to bring Fabrice back to the club and he has given everyone a real lift," said Russel while speaking to club media. "He is a player of immense quality and is exactly the type of player we need in the final third."

  • Evening all and welcome to tonight's match coverage of Sligo Rovers vs St. Patrick's Athletic. A win in the Showgrounds this evening reduces Shamrock Rovers' league lead down to a singular digit as The Saints remain in hot pursuit of the league title. Sligo have endured a underwhelming season so far this year but have got the better of Pats on both of the occasion's they've met this season, boasting 2-1 and 1-0 wins respectively.
