Match Report

Nolan Gives Wexford The Blues In South East Derby

Eddie Nolan struck to head home the only goal of a tight affair in Ferrycarrig Park as Waterford FC defeated Wexford FC 1-0 in the South East derby.

Connor Parsons went close 13 minutes in, cutting across the edge of the area from the left hand side before whipping a shot just the wrong side of the post.

Reece Webb struck a volley wide of the left hand post, coming onto a Kenny delivery after the frontman had made a fine run down the left hand side in Wexford’s only chance of the first half.

That concluded the goalmouth action in a surprisingly uneventful first half where Wexford frustrated a toothless Waterford attack whilst offering little going forward themselves.

A duo of poor free kicks in fantastic areas early in the second half displayed Waterford’s poor forward play, Both Coughlan and Baggely blazing over when they should have done much better.

Parsons found space down the left in the 68th minute, driving into the box, pulling the ball on to his left and forcing a good save. The resulting corner would go one better as Eddie Nolan forced his way through the crowd to nod the ball into the net from close range at the front post.

Eoin Kenny, who had a fine game running channels, was unable to finish after the ball dropped kindly to him from a floated free kick into the area 73 minutes in, pulling his scuffed shot into the side netting.

Substitute Aaron Doran was next to fire wide a good chance, pulling his low cross shot wide as Wexford broke quickly on 82 minutes.

Mason pulled out a couple of fine saves with five minutes remaining to give his side a fighting chance in the closing moments.

Subsequently they could have made the most of this chance, as in the 93rd minute Corban Piper ran on to meet a pull back just 12 yards out but skied the golden opportunity over the bar in an agonising end to game for Wexford who will feel they could have gotten something out of that game and fall back in the table once again, whilst Waterford take home the points and bragging rights.

  • 71'

That has changed the landscape of a game that seemed to be getting away from Waterford somewhat, now Wexford will need to come out and push for the equaliser

  • 69'

The resulting corner heralds the opening goal as Eddie Nolan muscles his way to the ball and nodding in at the front post from close range

  • 68'

Parsons races down the left, into the area as he faces up Browne one on one, pulling the ball onto his left and forcing a save

  • 67'

This half has fallen into a similar pattern as the first, though Wexford look slightly more threatening this period

And Coughlan repeats his first half mishap and sends the ball rocketing over, clearing the netting behind the goal

  • 50'

Waterford with a free kick 20 yards from goal, central, ideal position

  • 46'

We are back on here, and I think most people will be hoping for a bit of quality to crank this game into gear but Wexford can be quite happy with the scoreline as is

  • 45'

Half time whistle blows with the game still stuck at 1-1 in a very uneventful half full of bluster and effort, but short on quality attacking. Parsons went closest early on for Waterford, but both sides will need to bring something more to the able if the deadlock is to be broken here in the second period

  • 45'

Eddie Nolan heads wide under pressure, the number of Wexford heads around his means he can only direct the ball high and clear of the goal at the backpost

  • 30'

Coughlan smashes a free kick from all of 35 yards a country mile over the bar in a pretty ambitious attempt

  • 25'

The pace has slowed here, the game has become a bit stop start and Waterford can't find a rhythm in the final third

  • 20'

Wexford continue to sit deep to have frustrate Waterford in the attack but they would need to offer more on the counter if they want to keep a threat themselves throughout the contest

  • 13'

Parsons cuts in off Waterford's left hand side and his curling effort beats Mason all ends up but flies the wrong side of the posting the game stays scoreless

  • 10'

The opening ten minutes have been played at lightning pace, both sides looking sharp in these early exchanges

  • 8'

It was Kenny to take but his effort was straight into the wall in a pretty wasteful attempt

  • 7'

Eoin Kenny leads the line for Wexford tonight, having not played too much football in his short tenure at the club so far its a big night for him and he has just won a free kick in a fantastic position after some neat dribbling

  • 3'

Waterford are keeping Wexford penned in on the edge of their own area these opening five it what could be the shape of the teams for much of the game

  • 3'

Wexford are subject to some early pressure and Niall O'Keefe has a strike at goal for the visiting side but it is a rather simple claim for Mason in the Wexford goal

  • 1'

    And we are under way

  • Just moments away now as the sides step out onto the field, this one should be a cracker!

  • A mild Monday evening is the set here in a game which should prove more of a challenge to Waterford then their last, a comfortable 3-0 home win against bottom of the table Kerry Fc

  • Wexford start without both top scorer Aaron Dobbs and their recent acquisition Thomas Oluwa who has carried the goalscoring burden with aplomb in recent weeks

  • A huge game for both Derby pride and their promotion hopes, Wexford will be looking to make it back to back wins in this fixture

  • Atmospheres don't get much more lively than this in Ferrycarrig Park. The large contingencies from both sides have the ground rocking with chants from both sets of fans leading us up to kick off
