Match Report

Patterson double seals three points for Waterford

A goal in each half from Phoenix Patterson was enough to secure all three points for Waterford FC as they beat Wexford FC 2-0 in the southeast derby at Ferrycarrig Park.

In what was a game of fine margins, Patterson’s quality proved to be the difference in a well needed win for The Blues.

He opened the scoring after just eight minutes, cutting inside from the left wing and drilling the ball past Alex Moody.

The game became an even affair after the goal with neither side creating much.

Eddie Nolan made a great defensive block to deny Aaron Dobbs from close range.

The Blues led at the break and looked to double their lead minutes after the restart.

Alex Moody was called into action to save a Louis Britton header. Shane Griffin’s follow up was cleared off the line.

Both sides struggled to control possession as the game between a scrappy battle in midfield.

Waterford began to gain the upper hand just after the hour mark with Phoenix and Griffin causing problems on the counter.

Griffin was fouled by Harry Groome on the edge of the Wexford box after a quick counter.

Patterson would seal the win from the resulting free-kick, curling it into the bottom corner.

Moody would once again have to keep Louis Britton out and this time Harry Groome cleared the follow up, preventing Eddie Nolan from adding a third.

Aidan Friel had Wexford’s best chance of the second-half with a close range volley thumping the crossbar.

Tonight’s result means that Waterford go ahead of Treaty United for now and also create a six point gap between themselves and Wexford.

Their next game isn’t until May 2nd when they host Athlone Town.

Wexford are back in action next Friday travelling to Athlone.

  • Wexford starting XI is in. Aaron Dobbs returns to the starting lineup and Luka Lovic makes the squad for the first time since joining from Bray

  • As for the visitors, they are without a win in their last two outing. Coupled with the recent sacking of Ian Morris, it is a turbulent time for The Blues

  • Wexford were just narrowly beaten by Treaty United last week, but their last home game ended in a 4-2 win against Cobh. Victory tonight will see them go level on points with Waterford and help them continue their push for playoff places
