LOI FD Report: Aouachria hits hat-trick as Waterford beat Wexford

Wassim Aouachria scored a hat-trick tonight as he led Waterford to a 3-0 derby win in the opening game of the League of Ireland First Division season.

Waterford started the game with purpose and Aouachria broke the deadlock in the fourth minute. Idowu threatened down the right wing and created a chance for Aouachria to score his second.

Wexford tried valiantly to get back into the game and certainly, they added intensity to their tackles. However, any hope of a fight back was crushed with a 57th minute goal from Aouachria finished the game as a contest.

Waterford have started strongly tonight. They controlled possession in the early stages. Wassim Aouachria broke the deadlock, cutting in from the right and shoots, which was deflected over the keeper into the net.

Idowu, who played well throughout the night dribbled skilfully down the right, beat his man and crossed into the six yard box for Aouachria to easily tap in. 2-0.

Wexford tried to get back into the game and Adeyemo had penalty shouts which were ignored.

Wexford greatly increased the pressure on the Waterford defence but their final pass into the danger area let them down. Meanwhile, Colm Cox was under pressure and made a great double save in the 35 th minute to keep Wexford within two goals of Waterford.

However, just before half-time, the Wexford defence had a scare as Cox tried to play out from the back and Wexford almost lost possession before the experience head of Ethan Boyle cleared from danger.

While Wexford started positively in the second half, they could not stop the dangerman Aouachria from completing a hat-trick. A long ball out of defence found Aouachria beyond the defence and he calmly sidefooted the ball beyond Cox in goal, grabbing his hat-trick and laying down a marker for the top scorer award. James Keady made a triple substitution

to try to inspire his troops in the last quarter hour but it was not to be tonight. Waterford have laid down a marker tonight to the entire division, while for Wexford, they will be looking to improve on their display when they travel to Cobh Ramblers next Friday night.
