Match Report

Cobh snatch a point at the to deny Wexford win

Jack Doherty was on hand to haunt his former side with a last gasp penalty to snatch a point as Cobh Ramblers drew 2-2 with Wexford FC at St. Coleman’s Park.

It was a barren opening in terms of goalmouth action for both sides, Cobh dominated the ball but had failed to carve any openings by the 19th minute when Thomas Oluwa popped up in the box, latching onto a ball in from Ethan Boyle to slot Wexford in front against the run of play, his left footed shot beating Lee Steacy with the aid of a slight deflection as he took aim at the bottom left hand corner and found it with killer instinct.

Wexford were able to double their lead on the half hour mark, Levingston’s whipped corner was flicked goal wards at the front post, forcing Steacy into a good save, but he could only palm the ball into the path of Danny Furlong, who took full advantage from close range as Wexford took a commanding position in the game.

This sense of supremacy wouldn’t last awfully long though, as just three minutes later Cobh had pulled one back. Mickie Rowe drove into the Wexford box and pulled a shot across the face of goal allowing Tiernan O’ Brien, who found himself at the backpost with an open goal, to finish and bring his team back into the game.

Cobh continued to retain most of the possession, and despite both sides looking vulnerable in the wet weather, the score remained the same going into half time.

Cian O’ Malley hit the bar with a strong header after an hour, almost restoring Wexford’s two goal lead in the midst of a good spell for the South East side.

A tense second half bore little creative fruit and it looked like Wexford may take the win until a brainless challenge in the box in the 90th minute gave Doherty the opportunity to tie the game and the Cobh man was not to be denied, firing the ball into the top right corner to share the spoils.

Wexford will rue their missed chance to move up into fourth and close the gap on Cobh, but the home side won’t have a sweeter draw all season as they escape this one with a point they might not have deserved.

The full time whistle brings an end to this one, and with it some despair for the travelling Wexford contingent who will feel this is two points lost in the face of such an opportunity. Doherty's last minute penalty allows Cobh to escape with a point in a match they never looked comfortable in. Cobh Ramblers 2-2 Wexford FC

  • 90'

Doherty once again puts his former team to the sword and delivers this very painful blow to finally bring Cobh level with a fantastic penalty into the top right corner

Wexford would move to fourth should results stay the same in this and the Bray vs Athlone game, which would be a huge result for them

  • 86'

Ramblers are giving both barrels with less than five minutes left, but so far Wexford hold firm

  • 81'

Oluwa makes a brilliant run, but just takes too much out of it at the crucial moment and loses it with a man spare just off his shoulder completely in on goal

  • 80'

Rowe curls one just wide of the post, deflected slightly as Wexford continue to throw bodies in the way of everything at the back

  • 78'

Boyle has gone down here holding his hamstring, looks like it will be the end of his night

  • 75'

Wexford enter the final fifteen minutes still ahead, they will know how big these three points could be in their season

  • 69'

Some tough Wexford defending leads to a couple of very important blocks to keep the away side in front

  • 62'

  • 59'

O' Malley heads against the crossbar after a floated corner in, the ball is scrambled away to keep the deficit for Cobh to one

  • 57'

Wexford counter quickly, and while Piper's shot is blocked in the end, it once again exemplifies the threat and speed in this Wexford forward line

  • 52'

Oluwa spins with the ball on the edge of the area but his effort lacks power and is easily scooped up by Steacy

  • 49'

Cobh come out with determination and Wexford are immediately back under the cosh, where it looks like they may remain until Cobh find this equaliser they so desperately want

  • 46'

We are back on here at St. Coleman's Park

  • 45'

Half time comes here with Wexford in the lead, though definitely the team on the Blackfoot for most of the half. Oluwa's and Furlong's goals were against the run of play in a half otherwise controlled by Cobh, who themselves failed to create much outside of O' Brien's goal. It's been a clinical performance by the forwards here as it feels there have been only three major chances this half, and all those turned into goals

  • 45'

It's been a strange closing minutes to this half as Cobh have pushed and looked dangerous, but failed to create a chance of note as Wexford were happy to get into half time with their lead intact

  • 44'

Frahill picks up a booking for a lunging tackle that leaves the Wexford man on the floor

  • 36'

This game has a very open feel to it, and every attack looks likely to end in a goal, expect more goals in this one

  • 33'

Cobh grab one back straight away, Rowe drives into the Wexford area and pulls a shot across the goal and Tiernan O' Brien is on hand at the back post to dutifully finish and bring his team back into the game

  • 30'

Wexford double their lead on the half hour, a corner whipped to the front post is flicked goal wards and Steacy made a good reaction save, but the ball drops to Danny Furlong who pokes it in from close range to heap more misery on the home side

  • 28'

Mason once again drops on in his box dangerously as he can't keep hold of a wicked backrest corner but its again saved

  • 26'

Cobh have maintained their possession dominance as they now chase an equaliser

  • 19'

Oluwa puts Wexford into the lead, latching onto a ball across the box that the Cobh defenders could only stare at as Oluwa ran onto the rolling ball, firing a left footed shot into the corner back across the keeper to hand Wexford a lead against the run of play

  • 15'

Yellow card for Mikie Rowe as he senselessly pull O' Malley down by the collar of his jersey off the ball

  • 12'

Cobh keeping a lot of the ball so far, looking to find an opening with some quick short passes

  • 5'

Dangerous ball into the Wexford ball has young keeper Owen Mason scrambling to snatch the flying ball, but he drops it straight down, though fortunately for him his defender clears the threat

  • 1'

All three scorers from the previous meeting are not featured from the start here, might this impact the goalscoring in this game we will have to wait and see

  • 1'

And we are off here in the rain.

  • Their previous encounter was a thrilling one, as Jack Doherty made a dramatic return to Ferrycarrig Park, scoring an equaliser for his new team against the hosts late on before Wexford nabbed the win with a late strike from Aaron Dobbs. Tempers flared as a couple of red cards were dished out in the dying minutes at the end of a fantastic encounter, lets hope tonight is a similar story

  • Just a few moments away from kick off on a dreary Friday evening at St. Colemans Park as Cobh Ramblers play hosts to Wexford FC with both teams looking for these three points on offer to solidify their places in the playoff spots
