McLaughlin Fires Peamount Into Second Round

Erin McLaughlin’s goal in extra-time saw Peas overcome a spirited Treaty Utd side in the First Round of the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup at the Markets Field.

Twice the Premier Division league leaders had to come from behind in this game. Aoibhe Fleming broke the deadlock in the 17th minute before McLaughlin levelled in the 38th minute.

Before half-time Aoife Cronin put Treaty back in front but in the 50th minute Kate Mooney drew Peas level. Peas had several chances to win the game in normal time but couldn’t get a third goal. In the 10th minute of extra-time McLaughlin put Peas ahead for the first time in the game and it turned out to be the winner.

The visitors dominated the early exchanges. In the 11th minute a Dearbhaile Beirne ball into the area met the head of Mooney but she directed her effort just wide.

Against the run of play, Treaty took the lead in the 17th minute. Aoife Cronin with the ball to Fleming, she cut inside before her low strike found the back of the net.

Peas tried to get back into the game and were back on level terms in the 38th minute. Fitzgerald played a corner short to Freya Healy before she got the ball back and passed to McLaughlin, her shot went over the head of Ulliac and into the net.

Just before the break Treaty went back in front after a mess-up at the back from Peas. Cronin picked up the ball and made no mistake. In first half stoppage time Mooney thought she had drawn her side level but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Five minutes into the second half and Peas got their second. A corner was played short to McLaughlin, she floated the ball into the box and in a scramble Mooney got the vital touch.

Three minutes later and Mooney’s header just went wide from a Fitzgerald corner. In the 70th minute McLaughlin’s effort came off the crossbar.

In the 80th minute Ulliac pulled off a good save to deny Fitzgerald. On the stroke of 90 minutes Beirne played the ball into the box but McLaughlin’s effort got a deflection for a corner. Peas eventually got a third goal; Beirne with a ball to McLaughlin, she turned, found space before shooting past Ulliac.
