Match Report

Perfect Peas advance to semis

Peamount brushed aside Treaty United today at Jackman Park, advancing to the WFAI Cup Semi-final with a 2-0 win.

A back post header from Tiegan Ruddy and a 25-yard belter from Lauren O’Callaghan; provided the goals, to put the favourites through as Treaty never looked like scoring.

The Dublin side dominated from the start but they could only break the deadlock one minute into the second half as Treaty defended admirably in the first.

There was no magical cup tale today for the hosts and the score-line doesn’t tell the full story. The Peas attacked constantly for the whole 90 minutes in Limerick as expected and it’s hard to believe they only netted twice.

Treaty definitely deserve some credit though for their first half performance and for going in level at the break. Those plaudits go particularly to Lauren Keane who made numerous vital blocks and keeper Michaela Mitchell who was arguably man of the match today.

The current champions’ quality proved too much however and they scored almost nonchalantly straight into the second half. Skipper Aine O’Gorman’s ball met the head of Tiegan Ruddy and from here it felt the floodgates would open.

Peas had been going forward relentlessly all game. A patterned phase of play was a ball over the top from the midfield into the corners where O’Gorman always seemed to be perfectly placed to put a ball across the box.

The hosts weren’t playing as deep as perhaps expected and this caused them issues all afternoon. The fact they had nothing but scraps up top meant they gave themselves no choice but to face the Peamount onslaught, and so goals were inevitable. Jenna Slattery was lively up top but there was no real service.

Around the hour mark the game felt like it had lost its pace a bit and became a bit scrappy with the holders still looking comfortable. However in the 67th minute O’Callaghan struck beautifully into the roof of the net from 25 yards or so to kill the game. From then the affair was over despite Peamount hunting for a third.

Niall Connolly’s Treaty can walk away with heads head high having put up a great fight against a side with such an abundance of quality. While James O’Callaghan will now feel his Peas have a great chance to retain their WFAI Cup title.

  • 65'

Peamount will want a second to kill the game. As much as they have done incredibly to only be a goal down, they are living off scraps up top and need to create something if they want a chance of equalising

  • 58'

Alannah McEvoy takes the place of Megan Smyth-Lynch

  • 56'

Coming up to the hour mark now and the sting has somewhat been taken out of the game and it has become slightly more scrappy. Peamount still looking comfortable though

  • 46'

Goal! Straight into the second half the visitors do what they couldn't do all through the first half. Tiegan Ruddy with a header at the back post from O\'Gorman\'s ball. You get the feeling the floodgates could open now

  • 45'

Second half underway and Aine Walsh replaces Anna Shanagher

  • Half-time in Jackman Park and the Peas have dominated but you can only admire the way Treaty have held on. The longer this stalemate goes on the more the home side might start to believe in some cup magic

  • 45'

Mannix has now been replaced by Clodagh Doherty

  • 43'

Tara Mannix taken off injured and no sub made so Treaty are down a player to see out the half by the looks of it

  • 34'

  • 33'

Treaty haven't been able to create anything at all and the away defenders have stuck tight to Slattery. They will be delighted however to still be on level terms

  • 27'

A beautiful move between Roche and Sadbh Doyle is next to report on the Peas' quest to take the lead. The two linked up with some intricate one touch football on the edge of the box and Roche hit the following shot just over

  • 22'

Another opportunity for the Peamount skipper O'Gorman at the back post as they continue with but Mitchell saved. The visitors continue to attack relentlessly and if not for some good goalkeeping by Mitchell they would be ahead

  • 11'

Strong challenge by Karen Duggan on Slattery but the referee deemed it fair despite Slattery staying down
