Match Report
This game was rescheduled after the initial fixtures was abandoned on 18th August 2023 with Galway United winning on a scoreline of 2-0. Goals from Ronan Manning and Edward McCarthy.
An impressive Galway United side brushed off the disappointment of abandoned game on Friday night to secure their passage to the Quarter Finals of the FAI Senior Cup with a 5-0 victory against a poor UCD side in Belfield tonight. Galway had the ball in the net very early in the game but it was called back for an obvious handball from Ed McCarthy in the build up, moments later the simplest of chances would break the deadlock. A fabulous ball through found a massive hole in the UCD defence and Wassim Aouachria simply dinked the ball over the keeper to open the scoring after just five minutes, a move that would set the tone for the rest of the game as a UCD side, obviously low on confidence, struggled to live with their high flying First Division visitors who looked like they meant business. Two first half strikes from David Hurley, the second from a blistering quick free kick routine would wrap up the game as a contest even before Ronan Manning’s first half injury time volley made John Caulfield’s team talk the easiest of the season. Galway rang the changes start at half time with Rob Manley one of the replacements only needed three minutes on the field to add to the score. His unmarked close range header from a David Hurley corner made it five. A worrying problem for Andy Myler’s men who were out of sorts all evening. UCD would get a consolation goal however in the closing stages.as a nice UCD move saw the ball floated across the goal, with little pressure on him, Galway United substitute Oisin O’Reilly inexplicably side footed the student’s cross to his own net. The game finished as it started with the ball in the net in injury time, but it was ruled out due to a push at the corner. Caulfield won’t mind too much, his side progress to the quarter finals of the competition and their name is in tomorrow’s draw.Galway United Skip Student’s Test in FAI Cup
