Galway impress in win over UCD
Home side Galway Utd pulled off an impressive 4-1 win over UCD AFC in the SSE Airtricity League First Division this evening at Eamonn Deacy Park.
Galway led 1-0 at half time after a 38th minute Wilson Waweru goal and they only improved in the second half with strikes from Mikie Rowe in the 66th, Shane Doherty after 74 and Padraic Cunningham in the 83rd.
UCD’s only goal of the game came against the run of play in the 78th minute when Dara Keane took advantage of a defensive mix up.
The first half was a fairly evenly matched affair, and UCD had a couple of good opportunities early on.
Liam Kerrigan went close from the edge of the box in the 18th minute, with a good interception from O’Keefe to cut out the threat. Donal Higgins also had a good chance to score against his former club but the ball went just wide in the 27th minute.
It was tit for tat up until that 38th minute goal from Waweru and Galway took that lead into half time.
It seemed to be a different Galway outfit in the second half and they were more ruthless in their finishing. The second goal came in the 66th minute from Mikie Rowe who struck from a good distance out and it was after a good chance for UCD’s Evan Weir in the 60th minute.
The hosts played with more confidence after taking the 2-0 lead and Shane Doherty was only on the field around seven minutes before he struck low and hard to the right corner to put Galway 3-0 up in the 74th minute.
UCD’s goal in all honesty, came against the run of play in the 78th minute. There seemed to be a defensive mix up and Dara Keane took full advantage to provide the opportunity for Colm Whelan to poke it home to the net. Galway keeper Luke Denison also picked up an injury during the incident.
But sub Doherty was instrumental again in the 83rd minute as he laid off a ball to fellow substitute Padraic Cunningham, who hit it into an open goal for Galway’s fourth of the evening.
This win for Galway cements that second place in the table and manager John Caulfield will no doubt be impressed with his side’s display.

Galway Utd look like they've sealed the deal with a good finish from Padraic Cunningham after a pass from Shane Doherty. They lead 4-0 heading into the final minutes.
Dara Keane pulls a goal back for UCD after a defensive mix-up by the home side.
