Match Report

Great Galway start pays off in UCD

Tús maith leath na hoibre is an expression in the Gaeltacht in Connemara and Galway United definitely started strongly, dominating the first half to deliver a 2-0 win over UCD at the UCD Bowl tonight.

Ruairí Keating and Wilson Waweru were real threats going forward, both getting on the scoresheet in the second quarter. UCD had sustained periods of pressure but didn’t convert their chances.

While Liam Kerrigan looked dangerous for the students, Galway never looked threatened in the second half and won 2-0.

The travelling Galway United fans who were constantly in good voice throughout the match return down the M6 tonight in great spirits having seen their team beat UCD tonight. Galway started stronger, dominating the early passages, as UCD struggled to get out of their own half at times. Galway created chances from free-kicks and their wing play through Keating. The main criticism of Galway in this early period was that they didn’t score earlier. Galway had excellent moves such as in the twentieth minute when Mikey Place, who looked dangerous throughout,  headed into Lorcan Healy’s arms.

Galway broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark, after along ball to KEating, who showed excellent technique in the penalty area, he controlled it while turning on a swivel and volleyed to the back of the net. While Kerrigan was dangerous, showing a nice turn of pace to get space and shoot just before the half-time whistle.

Galway again got out of the traps early in the second half, punishing UCD. A long ball into Waweru found him one on one against Evan Osam, and he turned the defender before calmly finishing to the bottom corner of the UCD net to extend the Galway lead to 2-0.

Galway were now in control of this match while UCD really needed to be far more inventive than they had been in order to get back into the match. Lorcan Healy was forced into a magnificent save as Galway won the ball high in the UCD half and Hurley, impressive throughout, almost scoring through a wonderful long-range shot.

Galway held on for the victory and it places them three points clear of the Belfield outfit, in second place. Cobh Ramblers will not fancy a trip west to the team on a four match winning streak.
