Match Report

First-half dominance helps DLR Waves win at Cork City

DLR Waves picked up their first win in three games in the Women’s National League, defeating Cork City 3-0 in Turners Cross this evening.

First-half strikes from Kate Mooney and Sophie Watters were enough to see them win the tie, they were in control for large parts as Cork had chances but just could not deliver.

Maria O’Sullivan the busier of the two keepers as she departs back to the states and will not feature for the rest of the season, a huge blow for them as she was in great form this evening.

DLR had confidence from the off, attacking with intent but Cork to their credit did enough to keep them out early, their defence doing enough to keep out the threat from Waves.

Waves did eventually take the lead after 14 minutes, Nadine Clare broke into the area but was pushed in the back right in front of the match official, the referee pointed to the spot up stepped Kate Mooney to dispatch low to the net, sending Maria O’Sullivan the wrong way.

Cork had their first chance just minutes later, Nadine Seward breaking stride to create space out wide, she set up a cross into the area but Eve Badana gathered comfortably, Waves also had an opportunity to make it 2-0, Aoife Brophy getting into the box hitting a shot away which was parried out by O’Sullivan in the hosts goal, cross or shot she would have been happy if the net had bulged regardless.

Avril Brierley almost got their second before the half-hour mark, Sophie Watters delivering a long-range free into the area, Jess Gleeson’s header was not cleared by Cork and Brierley pounced, but her shot went wide of the target.

Watters would turn from provider to goal scorer just minutes later, straight from the training ground stuff, Katie Malone played a short corner to Kate Mooney, and Mooney passed it straight back for Malone to drive a low cross into the box and after a goalmouth scramble Watters found the mark to make it 2-0 after 43 minutes, a lead they took to the interval.

Waves started the half in great fashion, Watters with an early effort but O’Sullivan could easily save, Cork did have half chances however Laura Shine pouncing on a loose back pass but Eve Badana was out to clear, minutes later Lauren Singleton had a shot that had Badana scrambling across her goal, doing well to get a hand to it and put it out for a corner.

Mia Dodd made it 3-0 deep into added time, capitalising on a goalkeeping mistake before slotting home into an empty net, three gals, three points, Waves leave the happier of the sides
