Match Report
Cork deliver against Waves
22 points between the sides before the fixture, Cork City caused the upset of the weekend in the WNL today beating 4th placed DLR Waves 4-1 at Turner’s Cross.
A hat-trick from 17-year-old Laura Shine and a cherry on top at the foot of Becky Cassin aided their effort, Shuana Carroll’s goal wasn't enough for the Sky Blues to mount a comeback in this series 21 game.
The victory for the home side means they they edge closer to Bohemians in the table, while for Waves it throws their top three hopes awry.
Returning after the international break both sides were gunning for action and with three goals inside the opening 20 minutes their enthusiasm was evidently backed up with their output.
DLR looked to instate a high press to squeeze The Rebels, but with triangles of passes between Sarah McKevitt, Shaunagh McCarthy and Eva Mangan Cork were on a mission from the first whistle.
Inside seven minutes Shine netted her first after the ball was squared to her inside the six-yard box and while it was cancelled out just a few moments later via Carroll’s equaliser her brace came in the 17th minute.
It remained as so at the interval before City pushed on even further to add insult to injury in the second half.
Against all the odds they were in full control throughout the latter 45 minutes too, James O’Callaghan’s team press having come back to bite him as the visitors tired.
Cassin finished off a fantastic set piece move to supplement the scorecard with over an hour gone and it was plain sailing for Cork to close out the outstanding time.
The triumph imprints just their second success at home this season, their third overall in the 2021 Women’s National League calendar and leaves them with an exciting opportunity to progress before its conclusion.
For DLR this blow will be a tough one to stomach given their aspirations of a cup run were cut short earlier this month and with this result catching Wexford Youths in the league now also seems a stretch.

3 minutes until kick off!
The teams are in! We've around 15 minutes left until kick off
Today however there are vital tallies on the line for whoever emerges on top. For the Munster outfit it may result in them leapfrogging Athlone Town in seventh to edge closer to Bohemians, while the spoils would see DLR go within 10 points of Youths who currently sit in third.
On both other occasions they’ve met this season DLR have scraped away the three points from City through single goals. In series four Jessica Gleeson’s strike was enough in today’s replica ground, while the more recent outing in Series 13 at the Belfield Bowl saw Ciara Maher net late on for Graham Kelly’s squad.
Meanwhile in the same series Waves inflicted an identical scoreline on Galway, getting their own back on the Westerners who had knocked them out of the FAI Cup running just one week prior. For that win Jetta Berrill converted a wonderstrike in the 18th minute, while Rachel Doyle supplemented just a few moments later to sure up the victory.
While Republic of Ireland team duties took centre stage over the last two weeks before the interval Cork suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Bohemians at the Oscar Traynor Centre. Both of the goals coming from a dead ball, Ronan Collins’ Rebels will have to sure up on their set pieces if they are to be successful today.
A win would do wonders for the home side’s confidence given their shaky league and cup form as of late. For The Sky Blues on the other hand the chance at silverware seems well and truly adrift at this stage too, but with a solid position secured at 4th in the table for some time now they are in the hunt for Wexford Youths spot.
Cork City face DLR Waves at Turner’s Cross this afternoon at 2pm in the WNL’s return after the international break. My name is Alanna Cunnane and I'll be bringing you this afternoon's live updates
