Walsh delivers Derry draw
A 1-1 draw was played out at the Ryan McBride Brandywell between Derry City and Bohemians in the Premier Division tonight.
An 83rd minute strike from Ali Coote gave Bohs the lead.
However, it was cancelled out by Marc Walsh’s goal in the 94th minute.
The match seemed destined to be an attacking masterclass with both sides playing exceptional football in recent weeks.
This was not the case as there were almost 30 minutes on the clock before the first save of the game was made. Ross Tierney got on the end of a cross but he failed to get a decent connection on the ball and saw his shot deflected into the arms of Derry ‘keeper Nathan Gartside.
The hosts had a great chance at the end of the first half through a Will Patching free kick, but James Talbot did well to save his attempt that looked to be heading into the corner of the goal.
The north Dublin side had the better chances in the first half but really seemed to struggle with hitting the target.
The Candystripes could not find any rhythm in attack going into the interval, but will feel they should have been awarded a spot kick after two claims were waved away. The second of which looked to be a stonewall penalty.
Bohs started the second half at a high tempo and nearly took the lead after Tierney’s effort beat Gartside but was denied by the post.
It was the 82nd minute when the next chance came. Rory Feely came close to putting the away team ahead after getting onto the end of a free kick. However, his volley could only hit the side netting.
Less than a minute later, the Gypsies took the lead. Ali Coote found space on the edge of the box and he let fly finding the bottom left corner giving Gartside no chance.
Bohs looked all set for the three points, but substitute Marc Walsh popped in added time and drew Derry level. Talbot did his best to keep the ball from crossing the line but could not keep it out.
Ruaidhri Higgins will be delighted that his side could grab a point after going down late on.
Keith Lyons will be infuriated that his squad could not hold onto the three points after defending so well for the majority of the game.
