Clinical Coughlan breaks Treaty

Waterford made it five wins from as many games under new manager Keith Long, as Ronan Coughlan netted a superb treble in his hometown.

Treaty United made a surprising six changes ahead of Friday’s clash with Kerry, as a youthful XI struggled to match the full-time Waterford outfit.

The three points cuts the gap to seven behind leaders Galway United, with this clash a re-fixed game from March – which fell foul of the heavy rain on Shannonside.

The visitors were 2-0 ahead at half-time thanks to a Coughlan brace. Dean George did net soon after for the hosts, but the were unable to build on this.

Coughlan’s first, a penalty after 18 minutes came after he was fouled by defender Ben O’Riordan. He soon added his second, with good work from Dean McMenamy allowing the striker time at the back post to put Waterford in firm control.

Tommy Barrett’s halftime subs of Dean George and Alex Byrne combined with Willie Armshaw for a 49th minute goal. A poor clearance to hit a Waterford defender and fall kindly to George, when it looked like the chance was gone.

But, a third Waterford goal arrived just after the hour mark. A neat layoff from Barry Baggley set up Ryan Burke who drilled home low from just outside the area.

Coughlan completed his hat-trick, minutes later, curling home with confidence following a swift move from the visitors. The former Sligo Rovers frontman has 12 goals in his last six outings, with another former employer Bray Wanderers next up.
