Match Report

Waterford decisive in Munster derby

Waterford brushed Treaty United aside tonight with a 4-0 win to secure a sixth consecutive win in the First Division.

Treaty defended well in the first-half but Waterford got their opener after 50 minutes through Louis Britton and then the floodgates opened. Phoenix Patterson set up Idowu for the second on the hour mark.

Patterson then set up Shane Griffin who slotted home the third moments later before substitute Cian Kavanagh finished things off with a header in the box in the last minute of normal time.

Gary Hunt sees his side continue their red-hot form thanks to an unrelenting second-half performance in the Munster derby where Patterson and Idowu starred. It wasn’t always plain-sailing for the hosts as Treaty sat back in two backs of four and frustrated them with organised defending in the first-half.

The half consisted of The Blues constantly probing in the away half and dominating possession but equally failing to create many clear chances. Treaty didn’t threaten at all going forward but were organised in the first period and kept their opponents.

Right before the interval Louis Britton got a great chance for Waterford as a corner found his head on the six yard box. Jack Brady saved brilliantly though to keep the Limerick side level at the break.

It always felt like Treaty couldn’t hold on and just five minutes into the second-half the RSC outfit got their deserved opener. Rolund Idowu did well to beat his man and deliver a low cross to the back post where Louis Britton was waiting to tap home his 8th goal of the campaign.

It was always going to be open season on Tommy Barrett’s men from this point and sure enough the hosts got a second on the hour mark. After a mix-up Brady was off his line and Patterson picked up the ball, went to the by-line and squared it for an Idowu tap-in.

Shortly after Patterson’s creativity once again proved lucrative for Hunt’s team as he slipped a through ball to Shane Griffin who made it three-nil. The game died down from here as Waterford dominated and made it a non-event.

Sub Cian Kavanagh wrapped things up with 90 minutes on the clock as a corner met Killian Cantwell who headed back across goal where Kavanagh was waiting to head home. A game that really illuminated the gap between the front-runners and the rest of the league, and that now brings Waterford six points off second placed Galway.
