Longford earn draw with Drogheda
Longford Town fought hard to gain what could be a vital 1-1 draw with Drogheda United tonight at Bishopsgate.
The visitors took the advantage after just 13 minutes through Chris Lyons but perhaps became too relaxed with their lead as they seemed to become lethargic for the rest of the game
Longford never lost faith and got a well-deserved equaliser in the shape of top scorer Dylan Grimes in the 76th minute, giving them a priceless point.
Although the result does put the Drogs into fourth on goal difference, Tim Clancy will be disappointed at how things unfolded in what was really a game his team should have had wrapped up in the first half.
The away side had started the game playing some attractive football and took the lead after just 13 minutes. The prolific Lyons headed home Luke Heeney’s corner after some good movement and the feeling in the air was a straight forward three points for the Louth team.
However they took their foot off the gas and although Longford posed no real threat in the first half, Clancy will surely be frustrated at how overly settled his team appeared to be with their one goal lead.
The Midlanders really struggled to carve out openings. Loanee debutant Dean Williams was making positive runs up top but adequate service was absent.
On the restart it was much the same story, until Daire Doyle made a triple substitution and the hosts sparked into life. Aaron Dobbs and Rob Manley were sprung from the bench, and their good work ethic and drive particularly lifted the Town, as they began to press and run at the away defence.
For a certain period, outstanding Drogheda defending was all that kept out the reinvigorated Longford. Killian Phillips stood out making a couple of massive blocks.
United defended so sternly that it looked as though they would hold on. Dylan Grimes however, who was arguably man of the match, continued to cause them problems. He equalised to the delight of the home crowd in the 76th minute.
Drogs captain James Brown appealed for a foul as he went down in his own box but Grimes shrugged by him and scooped it over David Odumosu to level things. 1-1 it finished, a valuable point for Longford in the perspective of their season.
