Drogs deliver win over Longford
A comfortable scoreline doesn't reflect the true nature of Drogheda United's capture of the points in this pulsating SSE Airtricity Premier Division tie at Head in the Game Park.
First half goals from Ronan Murray and Mark Doyle and a late brace by substitute Adeyamo proved enough to settle the tie.
Aaron Dobbs scored Longford's only goal in the 52nd minute.
Played at a frantic pace, this game entertained and held the imagination right through.
Chris Lyons, Darragh Markey and Dylan Grimes enabled the Drogs to dictate the opening stanza.
Lyons was bundled over in the 35th minute, which allowed Ronan Murray to capitalise from the free kick, as he beat Lee Steacy, who was poorly positioned in his goal.
Drogheda's confidence was evident in the first half, as they moved the ball crisply and with intent.
Cillian Phillips did brilliantly to win a challenge, deep in his own half, which released James Brown and Chris Lyons, to combine to assist Mark Doyle.
A tightly marked Doyle surged from deep, to lunge, to squeeze the ball in, from a tight angle to score his side's second goal, before half-time.
It should have been routine from there.
However, Longford fought with hunger and ambition in the second half.
The introduction of Rob Manley and Aaron McNally, along with the fearless contribution of Callum Thompson, rejuvenated the traveling side.
Thompson worked his ball through, down the wing, and managed to get his cross away, which found Aaron Dodds, and he scrambled home from close.
Dylan Grimes and Rob Manley caused major difficulties, with the latter having an equaliser chalked off, for offside.
A tiring Drogheda were hanging on, as Lyons and Murray were replaced in the final quarter of the match.
It would be a pair of substitutes that would prove critical to the outcome of the game.
Daire Doyle's push for a leveller saw him withdraw Michael McDonnell, which left Longford exposed at the back.
Jordan Adeyemo, who replaced Lyons in the 83rd minute, took advantage of the space to score his side's third and fourth goals.
Both were the result of excellent teamwork requiring the devastating killer touch, which Adeyemo provided.
That's four wins on the bounce for Drogheda, who are the league's top scorers.
