Cork Snatch Point In Six Goal Thriller With Sligo
Cork City battled back from 3-0 down to earn a point away to Sligo Rovers at The Showgrounds this evening.
Goals from Emma Doherty (2) and Casy Howe (penalty) had the home side very much in control at the break but in a five minute spell in the second half City were back on level terms.
Laura Shine, Keira Sena and Alix Mendez drew them level in the 62nd minute.
It was an even opening few minutes but as the game went on the home side began to dominate. They broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Alice Lillie’s cross was finished to the net by Doherty who was at the far post.
Sligo doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Howe put away a penalty. It was the Northern Ireland International’s fifth league goal of the season.
In the 37th minute Sligo were awarded a free-kick which Doherty took but her effort was straight at City keeper Clodagh Fitzgerald. City tried to find a way to get back into the game. Eva Mangan went close for Danny Murphy’s side in the 35th minute. Right on the stroke of half-time Sligo got a third goal when Doherty was on target again from a corner.
City got on the scoresheet in the 57th minute when Laura Shine fired to the net. It was their first goal since their 2-1 defeat to Bohemians on the 10th of June.
Two minutes later and City got a second goal; Shaunagh McCarthy did very well to get down into the box before her cross was finished to the net by Keira Sena.
Amazingly City were back on level terms in the 62nd minute. As they piled on pressure the visitors were awarded a corner. Aliz Mendez took the kick and the ball squeezed past Sligo keeper Bonnie McKiernan at the near post.
Both sides had chances to win the game but couldn’t get a fourth goal. The result moves Sligo up to 9th in the table; ahead of Treaty Utd on goal difference. For City this result was much needed after five league defeats in a row.
