Match Report

Mata Scores Late Penalty To Snatch Draw For Bit O’Red

An injury time Max Mata penalty rescued a point for Sligo Rovers in a tightly fought 2-2 draw between Sligo Rovers and Cork City at The Showgrounds this evening.

A scrambled header from Cork City defender Jonas Hakkinen and a fine opportunist effort from former Sligo player Ruairi Keating put the Leesiders two ahead before a late flurry with a first senior goal from centre back Eanna Clancy and an injury time penalty from Mata drawing the sides level.

Sligo had started the brightest and when Fabrice Hartmann intercepted a poor pass from Hakkinen after 8 minutes he ran at the defence buy saw his 20 year screamer fizz just over the crossbar of former Irish underage international Jimmy Corcoran.

The next fifteen minutes was all about Johan Brannefalk. Initially the Swedish national came to his side’s rescue with a close range block on Daniel Krezic who had found a little space in the Sligo box.

The swede then turned provider as he wreaked havoc on the Cork defence, his direct running and impressive crossing created plenty of opportunities for his teammates but no one gambled on the quality he was producing and the chances went a begging.

It would be Cork who would get the breakthrough almost against the run of play. A deep corner is half cleared and former Sligo man Ruairi Keating sees his powerful effort cleared off the line by Max Mata but the ball falls to the Cork defender Hakkinen who rises highest to find the back of the Sligo net.

Cork would continue to dominate the remainder of the half as they pressed for a second effort but could not find the net.

Changes at the break would have an effect as sub Kailin Barlow showed a bit of invention for the home side. Sligo had a penalty shout turned away by the referee before Cork finally found their second.

A kind ricochet found the feet of Keating who turned and found the bottom corner with the help of the inside of the near post to beat McNicholas on 67 minutes.

Sligo dominated the remainder of the game and their efforts were rewarded when Eanna Clancy met a corner with a lovely right foot volley for his first senior goal to half the deficit with just over ten minutes left on the clock.

He almost made it level minutes when his header was acrobatically turned over the bar by Corcoran in the Cork goal.

In injury time Kailin Barlow was brought down just inside the box and Max Mata stepped up to bury the resulting penalty to earn Sligo a point in a frenetic game.

  • 76'

Babatunde Owulabi has an effort that has McNicholas hustling but he has the effort, which goes just wide, covered.

  • 71'

Fabrice Hartmann has the best chance for Rovers as they chase a way back into the game. The German stole possession just inside the Cork half. He ran right at the goal but his effort went just wide of the far post with Corcoran scrambling across his line.

  • 67'

Three subs, with Babatunde Owolabi replaces the goalscorer Keating for Cork while John Russell replaces Frank Liivak & Bogdan Vastsuk and Stefan Radosavljevic & Will Fitzgerald for the home side.

  • 67'

Hakkinen wants to get himself a full set this evening after scoring earlier. He's picked up a booking for what appears to be a step on the toes of Luke McNicholas.

  • 65'

Luke McNicholas is at full stretch to stop Cork from making it a three goal lead. Keating with a half chance from long distance but the Mayo man gets down to tip the ball around the post for a corner.

  • 63'

And as happened so often for Bit O'Red fans, a former player comes back to find the net for Cork City as Ruairi Keating takes advantage of a ricocheted ball in defence for Sligo to turn and finish off the bottom of the near post. 2-0 to the visitors who don't look like losing this game from here.

  • 62'

Sligo Rovers have had all the possession in the last few minutes but just can't seem to create an opportunity to score. Kailin Barlow has made a decent impact since his introduction.

  • 55'

Darragh Crowley is replaced by Albin Winbo for Cork.

  • 48'

Sligo have a penalty shout but the referee is not interested and waves away the protest. Sligo have started this second half brightest.

  • 45'

The first half ends here with Cork City the happier of the two sides. 1-0 to the visitors.

  • 45'

The crowd are on their feet for a lovely little move by Reece Hutchinson who broke the ankles of Darragh Crowley with a simple twist of his body. Ended up being snapped up by Crowley who injured himself and got booked for his efforts. The worst trifecta possible without scoring an OG.

  • 43'

Sligo Rovers are growing more into this game as Greg Bolger almost makes an opportunity for himself on the edge of the box but it's knocked out for a corner which Cork manage to deal with comfortably.

  • 41'

Decent break from Sligo as Max Mata gets to the ball over the top before Corcoran but the Cork keeper puts him off enough. Sligo retain possession and territory and a lovely through ball from Greg Bolger finds that man, Hakkinen free in the box. He just can\'t keep his low drilled effort on target.

  • 37'

It's all gone a little stale here. Both sides making numerous individual errors with little to no pattern of play evident from either side as they struggle to get going. Cork will be more than happy with the situation as they continue to send long balls forward to apply some pressure on the home side.

  • 27'

Max Mata challenges for a ball in the Cork box, but his effort is headed to Stefan Radosavljevic who's effort is saved by the outstretched foot of Corcoran. The referee pulled it back for a high foot from Mata in the buildup but an excellent save by the Cork keeper.

  • 25'

Hakkinen has been threatening for the home side, at the heart of everything impressive they have done in the opening 25 minutes. His whipped cross under pressure from the City full back flies across the face of the goal but wasn't read by any of the Bit O'Red forwards lurking in the box.

  • 19'

Cork have enjoyed a nice spell of pressure with a number of half chances being blocked but from a dubious corner Jonas Hakkinen rises highest at the second attempt to put the ball in the home net.

  • 17'

Johan Brannefalk continues to appeal to the home fans with some great hustle, first a rasping volley into the midriff of Krezic before chasing a Cork player to win a crunching tackle.

  • 13'

Daniel Krezic found a little bit of space on the edge of the Sligo box, shifting the ball onto his right foot his effort was blocked out by Johan Brannefalk.

  • 7'

Fabrice Hartmann has the first real opportunity pouncing on a stray Hakkinen pass to run at the Cork defence but his effort fizzes just over the top corner of Jimmy Corcoran's goal.

  • And we are ready to go here on a cool night in The Showgrounds as Colin Healy's Cork City side provide the opposition for Sligo Rovers.
