Match Report
Keating Breaks Rebel Army Losing Streak
Ruairi Keating’s 16th minute strike guided Cork City to a first win in six games as they defeated Sligo Rovers 1-0 at Turners Cross.
It was a nervy opening fifteen minutes which lacked tempo and rhythm with low confidence levels evident on both sides.
The game sparked into life however in the 16th minute when Ruairi Keating put City 1-0 ahead when he was played through by Ben O’Brien Whitmarsh before the club’s top scorer this season slotted home into the bottom left-hand corner.
Nando Pjinaker was Sligo’s top performer in the first half and forced Jimmy Corcoran into making a save on twenty minutes when he flashed a shot across the face of goal.
Tunde Owolabi and Whitmarsh linked up well at the other end of the pitch causing havoc for Sligo’s defence and the former nearly doubled City’s lead just before the break but blazed his shot over the bar from close range.
Sligo knew they would have to up the tempo in order to get back into the game and to their credit, they were a better side in the second half. Fabrice Hartman went close for Rovers when his low driven shot was just tipped around the post by Corcoran.
Both sides rang the changes mid-way through the second half as the respective managers attempted to turn the screw.
Despite this, it was the ever-present Owolabi who nearly doubled City’s lead in the 79th minute but really should have squared it to Matt Healy who had an open goal in front of him.
There would be late drama as Matt Healy would be sent off for a second yellow as he was given his marching orders for a high foot in injury time. Remarkably this would be the third game in a row where City would have someone sent off.
Unlike last week however, City would hold on for a vital three points to end their six game losing streak.

Full time and City hold on for a 1-0 victory to end their six game losing streak.
Matt Healy is sent off for City for a second yellow, a harsh enough foul it has to be said for a high foot.
Five additional minutes to be played.
Owolabi does incredibly well to just get an effort away there after being under huge pressure by the Sligo defence.
Nervy moments for the City defence as Sligo have a threatening set piece. To their credit the City defence manages to deal with it as the minutes tick down.
Brannefalk off for Browning for Sligo.
Daniel Creszic is on for Gordon Walker for City.
Owolabi inches away from scoring for City but he should have squared to Matt Healy who had an open goal.
Both sides makes subs with Whitmarsh off for Barry Coffey while Daniel Lafferty replaces Frank Liivak for Sligo.
And so does Bolger for preventing a professional foul.
Yellow card for David Cawley for a late challenge on Owolabi.
City keeper Jimmy Corcoran down at the moment recieving treatment but is fit to continue.
Sligo going through a mini purple patch here with the Bit O'Red upping the tempo in order to try and get the equaliser.
Fabrice Hartman with Sligo's best chance of the game so far, he takes a long range effort which looks like creeping into the bottom corner but Corcoran does well to get down and save.
Back underway, no changes to either side at the beginning of the second half.
Half time with City going in 1-0 up at the break in a game which they've been much the better team so far and should be further ahead.
Great chance for Owulabi but he blazes his shot over from close range.
Tunde Owulabi is brought down by Hutchinson with the Belgian through on goal, possibly lucky to stay on the pitch as he was last man back. In the meantime Keating hits the bar.
Matt Healy is booked in the meantime for disrupting play.
Owulabi goes close for City but can't quite get on the end of a cross which is blocked by Greg Bolger.
Whitmarsh might be the youngest player on the pitch but he's been the most impressive so far, linking up very well with Keating as seen already with the goal, it's no wonder West Ham are interested in him.
Nando Pjinaker goes close for Sligo after he gets on the recieving end of a free kick, unfortunately for him however his shot across the face of goal is saved by keeper Jimmy Corcoran.
Just when I say that Ruairi Keating gives City the lead with a clinical finish after a great ball from Joe O'Brien Whitmarsh.
Very uneventful opening 15 minutes with neither side able to establish any sort of dominance in a game which has lacked tempo and rythim so far.
Both teams trying to establish a foothold in the game early on.
Underway at Turners Cross.
