Sligo secured their first win in 19 attempts with two first half Casey Howe strikes the difference between two sides struggling in the Women’s Premier Division this term.

The Northern Ireland internationals two opportunistic efforts sealed the Bit O’Red’s first league points of the season as they leapfrogged their hosts off the bottom of the league table.

There was a quarter hour on the clock when a ball over the top released Howe who got to the ball ahead of the onrushing Hannah Walsh and he simply passed the ball past the keeper into the net.

The second came just before half time when another long ball forward saw Howe win the race from inside her own half. The chasing defenders closed her down but the quality of the international striker was evident as she jinked between them to give herself the shot on goal. Her low effort found the bottom corner of the net to double the visitors advantage.

Just as pleasing for Steve Feeney’s side will be the first clean sheet in 24 games since their goalless draw at Treaty United almost a full year ago.

Danny Murphy will be disappointed with his side’s response but they looked way off the pace and lacked the cutting edge required to cause problems for the visitors.

Sligo will look to keep their momentum going when they host Shelbourne at the Showgrounds next Saturday meanwhile Cork will have time to lick their wounds with the next round of fixtures being their bye week.
