Mangan magic seals Cork City win
An Eva Mangan free-kick two minutes from time was the difference as Cork City defeated Sligo Rovers 3-2 in an entertaining contest at Turners Cross.
Despite their losing record against the visitors, City started the better and nearly took an early lead when Becky Cassin forced Sligo keeper Amy Mahon into a great save after five minutes.
City’s early work was rewarded in the 12th minute when Laura Shine ran in behind the Sligo defence before rolling the ball past Mahon to give the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead.
Cork’s lead lasted only four minutes however when Paula McGrory’s long ranged effort caught out Abbie McCarthy for the equaliser completely against the run of play.
The goal completely changed the momentum of the game for the next ten minutes with Sligo beginning to dominate the ball while also looking dangerous from corners.
Despite this it was City and indeed Shine, who came closest to scoring again when the striker hit the post after Mahon came off her line during a goalmouth scramble.
It was end to end for the last ten minutes of an entertaining half with both McCarthy and Mahon denying the respective attacking lines in what was a busy period for the goalkeepers.
The pace of the game was understandably slower at the beginning of the second half but soon increased again as both sides threw caution to the wind. Nadine Seward had the best chance in the 57th minute but hit her close range shot straight at Mahon.
While nearly conceding at one end, the visitors scored on their next visit to City’s box with goal coming through McGrory once again when she fired her shot into the far left corner to put Sligo 2-1 ahead.
The lead would last only eight minutes however as City captain Becky Cassin levelled the game at 2-2 with an impressive finish of her own to set up a tantalising final twenty minutes.
It could have 3-2 City in the 78th minute when Eva Mangan found Lauren Walsh with a great ball but the right back put her shot just left and wide of the goal.
City would get their goal however two minutes from time through a fantastic free kick from Eva Mangan which found the Sligo net to seal a 3-2 win and their first in five games.
