Match Report

Doherty Strikes Early To Claim Narrow Win For Sligo

Goals from Emma Doherty and Gemma McGuinness were the difference as Sligo Rovers claimed an impressive 2-0 victory over Cork City at the Showgrounds.

There was no time for the feeling out process as Emma Doherty found the net after 40 seconds straight from the kick-off. A well worked goal through the middle along with some slack City defending helped in giving the hosts the perfect start.

Sligo continued to be in the ascendancy with Doherty once again to the fore. Her beautiful looping pass into Gemma McGuinness should have doubled their lead on 25 minutes but Cork keeper Maria O’Sullivan did well to come out and deny the Sligo striker.

Moments later the Bit O’Red were on the attack again. City defender Ciara McNamara somehow managed to clear the ball off her line after McGuinness’s shot hit the post.

City’s best attack in the first half came just after the half hour mark through Riona Crowley. The midfielder had great vision in attempting to pick out Lauren Singleton with a great cross, but was denied at the last moment for what would have been a certain goal.

Despite City starting better in the second half, it was Sligo who looked the likelier to score. Fiona Doherty and McGuinness caused all sorts of problems for the City defence with their effective runs in behind with only the offside trap and O’Sullivan preventing them from scoring.

The home side began to retreat into their shell as Cork chased an equaliser. Natalie O’Brien came closest on 67 minutes when here fine long-range effort was just saved by Sligo keeper Amy Mahon in what was a commanding performance from the keeper in between the sticks for the injured Kristen Sample.

Gemma McGuinness sealed the points on 85 minutes with a great run in behind the City defence leaving her one on with O’Sullivan before slotting home to make it 2-0 with Stephen Feely’s side claiming their fourth win of the season in the process.

  • Full-time at the Showgrounds and Sligo pick up their fourth victory of the season in a deserved 2-0 victory.

  • 90'

    Two minutes of added time.

  • 85'

McGuinness looks to have sealed the points for Sligo Rovers. A great run in behind the defence with a shot to match. A very impressive performance from her today.

  • 81'

McGrory and Doherty replaced by Aoife Brennan and Lauren McLellan for Sligo.

  • 80'

Orlaith Deasy makes way for Aoibhinn Donnelly for Cork.

  • 76'

Great chance for Emma Doherty to seal it for Sligo from a tight angle. Credit to O'Sullivan however who makes a great save.

  • 72'

Sub for Sligo as Kate Melly is on for Fiona Doherty.

  • 67'

Good long range effort from Natalie O'Brien there for Cork. Mahon makes a good save. Very few clear cut chances so far in the second half.

  • 59'

Despite City starting better in the second half, it's Sligo who look more likely to score again. Fiona Doherty and McGuinness causing a lot of problems for the City defence, especially when they run in behind.

  • 52'

First booking of the day goes to Cork's Becky Cassin for tugging the jersey of Gemma McGuinness.

  • 49'

Mahon does well there after Nadine Seward puts in a great ball for Shaunagh McCarthy. Really good goalkeeping there from the Sligo player in what was a very tricky cross to deal with.

  • 46'

A change for Rovers at the break with the injured Pixie O’ Hara replaced by Jessica Casey.

  • 46'

Triple change for City at the break - Shaunagh McCarthy, Ellie O'Brien & Nathalie O'Brien replace Riona Crowley, Lauren Singleton & Lauren Walsh.

  • Half-time at the Showgrounds and it's Sligo who take a deserved 1-0 lead at the break. Outside of Doherty's goal and a couple of close calls it's been a scrappy game so far.

  • 45'

1 additional minute of added time in the first half.

  • 35'

Play back underway with Doherty still on the pitch.

  • 33'

Worry for Sligo here as Fiona Doherty is down injured and receiving treatment.

  • 29'

Ciara McNamara nearly puts the ball into her own net but Cork keeper Maria O'Sullivan manages to gather. Too many close calls for comfort from a City perspective.

  • 25'

Great chance for McGuinness to double Sligo's lead. A really well worked move leaves here with a chance from close range but the shot goes just wide.

  • 20'

The pace has picked up in the past five minutes as the game begins to flow from end to end. Orlaith Deasy does well to deny Gemma McGuinness before City go close down the other end.

  • 15'

Last few minutes has been a game of throws with the ball seemingly going out of play more than it's been kept in. Outside of the goal, neither team has been tested.

  • 9'

Good response from City to the goal. Orlaith Deasy takes their first shot but its well wide.

  • 1'

Emma Doherty gives the Bit O'red the perfect start with a great header. 40 seconds on the clock.

  • 1'

    Underway.

  • Teams coming out onto the pitch.
