Dundalk Narrowly Miss Out On European Spot
UCD gave them a scare but Dundalk got the job done as they defeated the students 5-1 at the UCD Bowl when it looked as if the fourth-place finish had been presented it was slammed in their faces once more in the second half.
While they finished off the resilient students Shelbourne defeated Louth neighbours Drogheda and Dundalk will be without European football – officially for the 2024 season.
UCD were to take the lead after an initial shot fell to the back post and Dundalk failed to clear their lines with Michael Gallagher at the back post on hand to slam it home in what was the perfect start for the students. They almost added a second following a free kick from Jack Keeney that went over the bar but it looked to worry Dundalk keeper Nathan Sheppard who followed the flight path.
Dundalk had a series of half chances with Lorcan Healy not overly troubled until Hayden Muller picked up the ball on the edge of the area and struck a thunderous hit that cannoned off the crossbar, it looked as if Cameron Elliot would apply the finishing touch only for the ball to go wide. Dundalk were to draw level as Paul Doyle slammed the ball home to give Dundalk the Euro lifeline, Conor Malley sent in a cross that failed to be cleared and Doyle struck a low curling effort to the back of the net.
The Lilywhites continued to turn the pressure on the hosts with Elliot, Muller, Malley and Hoban all having sights on goal but the sides remained level at the break.
After a flat opening fifteen minutes, Dundalk were to take the lead at the Bowl. Following a neat touch from Hoban to slip Horgan in on the right, he looked like he might pull it across but hammered to the roof of the net for his 6th final day of the season goal.
Daniel Kelly was to add a third and to score his second goal in two games with Malley hitting an excellent through ball to Kelly who rounded the keeper and slotted it home. In the next wave of attack, Dundalk were to add a fourth with a trademark goal as Archie Davies sent in a teasing cross and Hoban was on hand to head it home.
They were almost to add a fifth as a perfect ball cross from Hoban met John Martins whose goalbound header was perfectly tipped onto the bar by Healy in what was a wonderful save. Martin was to carve another chance that would have led to Dundalk's fifth as he struck a thunderous strike that cannoned off the post and Hoban was on hand to slot it home from close range.
