Dundalk Pick Up Much Needed Win Over UCD
Dundalk F.C. recovered from an early UCD goal to run out 4-1 winners over the Students at Oriel Park this afternoon.
Despite Jake Doyle’s early opener against the run of play, a Patrick Hoban penalty and a close-range effort from Daniel Kelly meant the turnaround was complete by the time the halftime whistle was blown.
Having recovered from the early setback, Stephen O’Donnell’s men could enjoy themselves in the second half as Patrick Hoban bagged his hattrick to equal Dundalk’s all-time scoring record cementing his place as a true legend at Oriel Park.
Dundalk nearly opened the scoring in the opening two minutes after a Ryan O’Kane freekick found Darragh Leahy who narrowly headed over the bar. Daniel Kelly followed up minutes later with the first shot on target from just outside the area.
Despite the early possession, UCD stunned the home crowd early on with an opener after a mix-up at the back for the Lilywhites. Daniel Norris headed the ball into the box which Andy Boyle looked to be in a comfortable position to deal with.
However, the defender's header back to Sheppard was short and the keeper hesitated, allowing Jake Doyle to pounce and open the scoring for the College with a simple finish.
Dundalk seemed rattled by the goal and frantically tried to get back into the game. Yli-Kokko forced an excellent save from Kian Moore after an Archie Davis cross wasn’t cleared properly by UCD.
Yli-Kokko was involved in the action again minutes later when he was fouled inside the box by UCD midfielder Alex Nolan. The on-loan Finnish player did well to get in front of the ball before being kicked in the back of the leg by the UCD midfielder. Patrick Hoban confidently stepped up for the spot-kick and sent Kian Moore the wrong way by slotting the ball into the bottom right corner.
The equaliser spurred on Stephen O’Donnell’s side who kicked on and almost took the lead two minutes later. Cameron Elliot showed some lovely hold-up play and set up Daniel Kelly. The winger was well placed but slightly sliced the effort which rattled the side netting.
Dundalk continued to pressure the UCD defence, particularly with several deliveries into the Students’ box. They completed the turnaround after 40 minutes when the lively Daniel Kelly was first to react to a knocked-down header by Hoban in the UCD box. The winger judged it well and was given a simple effort from close range.
While UCD made a dream start to the first half, it was Dundalk’s turn to get an early goal in the second and it was a goal of real quality. Louie Annesley, who made his return to the side this afternoon, sprayed the ball wide to Kelly. The winger then fed the ball back to Archie Davis who crossed first time and accurately picked out Hoban for his second of the game.
On the hour mark, Ryan O’Kane rattled the woodwork after cutting inside and shooting from distance. However, Dundalk didn’t have to wait long for another and it was Patrick Hoban with another header to get his hat trick thanks to a lovely cross from Darragh Leahy.
The game turned into a training match for Dundalk as the second half progressed. Former UCD man and substitute Paul Doyle almost made it 5-1 but his effort was cleared off the line by Danu Kinsella-Bishop before John Martin forced an excellent save out of Kian Moore.
1,762 people were at Oriel Park this bank holiday Monday to witness history as Hoban equals Joey Donnelly’s record of 142 goals for the Louth club and the Galway man did it in some style as he takes home the match ball.
Hoban’s display helps Dundalk put an end to their four-game losing streak as they travel to Turner’s Cross on Friday to take on Cork City. Meanwhile, things don’t get easier for Andy Myler’s UCD side, they make the short trip to Tallaght on Friday to face Shamrock Rovers.

Moore saves the freekick and the referee blows for full time. Dundalk 4-1 UCD AFC. Match report coming your way very shortly.
Freekick for the Lilywhites deep in their attacking half as the clock ticks on.
3 additional minutes here at Oriel Park.
The changes have taken the sting out of the game somewhat but make no mistake, the home side are absolutely cruising as we enter the final five minutes.
Muller and Malley replace Davis and Yli-Kokko.
What a save by Moore to deny John Martin. Despite the score line, Moore can hold his head up high today with some great saves.
Danu Kinsella-Bishop clears the ball of the line to deny former UCD man Paul Doyle a goal against his former club.
Triple change for Dundalk as Hoban comes off to great applause. Ward, Martin and Doyle are all introduced.
Goal for Hoban and that's his hattrick! He equals the all time goal scoring record for Dundalk, what a player and what a servant to the club!
Darragh Leahy gets the first booking of the game and there is no complaints from the former Ireland youth international.
Lovely play by Cameron Elliot who twists and turns the UCD defenders but Moore does well to deny the chip.
Post! Lovely stuff from Ryan O'Kane who cuts inside before lining up the shot. He hits it beautifully but is denied by the woodwork.
Triple change for UCD as Bowden, Donoghue and Babb replace Norris, O'Brien and Nolan.
A turnaround will be a tough ask for the Students here. It's a very hot day and the legs will be sore after a quick turnaround from Friday's fixture. Stephen O'Donnell will hope his side remain composed and perhaps add to their tally.
Great Dundalk goal as Hoban headers home for his second of the game. Annesley sprays the ball out to Kelly. The winger sets it back for Archie Davis who delivers an excellent cross that finds the on-rushing Hoban. Great team goal of real quality for the home side.
Alex Nolan gets us back underway for the visitors.
Halftime whistle sounds as Dundalk lead UCD 2-1.
2 additional minutes here at Oriel Park.
The Lilywhites take the lead! Daniel Kelly is the first to react to a knocked down header by Hoban in the UCD box and knocks it past Moore.
Dundalk still with plenty of the ball and certainly looking to flood the UCD box with plenty of crosses. The fullbacks are pressing high for the Lilywhites and is causing UCD some problems.
Great cross from Kelly at the byline finds Elliot but his header is pushed around the post by Moore.
Excellent run by Kinsella-Bishop almost gets him through on goal but excellent defending from Louie Annesley denies him a shooting opportunity.
The Lilywhites sensing blood here and playing with much more purpose since the equaliser. On this occasion after some lovely build-up, Leahy crosses to the back post but the angle on the header is tough for Kelly who heads wide.
Close! Good hold up from Elliot tees up Daniel Kelly inside the box but his shot rattles the side netting.
Goal! Pat Hoban confidently steps up and sends Moore the wrong way. 1-1!
Penalty Dundalk! Yli-Kokko is brought down by Alex Nolan and the referee awards it.
An Archie Davis cross isn't cleared and lands to Yli-Kokko who forces an excellent save from Moore who got a great hand to the shot.
The delivery is too close to Moore on this occasion to comfortably gathers the ball.
Chance for Ryan O'Kane to deliver another cross into the box as he is fouled by Harvey O'Brien.
Ciaran Behan suffered an ankle injury just before the goal and is unable to continue. He is replaced by Danu Kinsella-Bishop.
UCD take the lead! The home crowd are shocked as a mix up between Andy Boyle and Nathan Sheppard allows Jake Doyle to knock it home and the Students open the scoring!
Daniel Kelly cuts inside from the right side and gets a low shot on target but it doesn't trouble Kian Moore who gets down to collect.
Close! Early set-piece by Ryan O'Kane finds Darragh Leahy who headers just over the bar.
Yli-Kokko gets us underway!
The teams have emerged to a sunny Oriel Park, perfect conditions for this afternoons bank holiday clash.
Just 6 players named on the UCD bench says all you need to know about the state of their injury ridden squad. Plenty of defensive talent in the starting lineup, however so they will not be easy to break down. Ryan O'Kane ran the show against the Students last time out with a goal and an assist so the Students will have to get to grips with the winger if they have any hope of getting something out of tonight's game.
Meanwhile UCD also make four changes after their defeat to St Pats. Kian Moore, Michael Gallagher and Alex Nolan enter the fray while captain Jack Keaney returns to the side after his one game suspension. They are introduced in place of Lorcan Healy, Daniel Babb, Dara Keane and Colin Bolton.
The home side make four changes from the side that lost 2-0 in Tallaght on Friday night. Louie Annesley, Johannes Yli-Kokko, Ryan O’Kane and Cameron Elliott are all introduced in place of Hayden Muller, Paul Doyle, Conor Malley and Rayhaan Tulloch.
