Match Report

Mata To The Rescue For Bit O’Red At The Showgrounds

Max Mata’s second half strike was enough to earn a deserved draw for Sligo Rovers in a dour encounter with Drogheda United this evening in The Showgrounds.

Ryan Brennan had given the visitors a first half lead when he bundled the ball home in the middle of a penalty box scramble.

It was a dour first half lacking any real consistent quality from either side in wet and windy conditions in The Showgrounds.

A Reese Hutchinson cross went dangerously close to the top corner but Drogs keeper Colin McCabe was on hand to push the ball over the bar to safety.

Full back Frank Liivak would get the next half chance as his run into the box, coupled with a little chaos in the Drogheda United defence would see the Estonian almost get on the end of the move. There were calls for a penalty from the home support but the referee waved away the protests.

It would be almost half an hour into the game before Drogheda created their first real opportunity with the lively Darragh Markey getting on the end of a lovely move from the visitors but his header didn’t come close to disturbing McNicholas in the Sligo goal.

Sligo’s ill discipline started to emerge as they picked up three bookings in the last ten minutes of the half as Bolger, Browning and Radosavljevic all ended up in Arnold Hunter’s notebook. The Serbian lucky not to see red for his challenge on Elicha Ahul.

Drogheda started the second half brightly and once again it was Darragh Markey who was the architect of the breakthrough score. A quick corner saw the diminutive playmaker whip in a cross and the ball bounced around a few bodies before Ryan Brennan managed to scoop the ball past McNicholas to put the visitors ahead.

Russell rang the changes for the home side bringing in Niall Morahan and Kailin Barlow and it had an immediate effect. Barlow almost levelled matters but his effort was blocked by a defender.

A couple of minutes later the sides were level, a blistering run from Reece Hutchinson saw a cross meet the head of Max Mata and his close range finish put him back on the top of the league’s goalscorer charts.

Sligo continued to dominate the game and aside from a Ryan Brennan effort straight down the throat of McNicholas they struggled to create an opportunity.

Sligo had a penalty shout denied in the fifth minute of injury time when Barlow hit the ground under a challenge from a Drogheda defender but the referee waved away the protests before he blew the final whistle a few seconds later.

The hosts couldn’t find the breakthrough and both managers will be disappointed with the dropped points this evening.

  • 75'

Ryan Brennan has an opportunity from a squared low ball but it's straight at McNicholas.

  • 72'

Kailin Barlow almost gets on the end of a beautiful ball from Hartmann as he chips the ball across the box into the youngsters path but McCabe gets to the ball ahead of the Sligo forward.

  • 70'

Max Mata has pulled one back for the home side as the League's top scorer finds the net from close range with his head. McCabe with no chance of keeping that out.

  • 57'

Niall Morahan and Kailan Barlow come into the side for Sligo.

  • 52'

GOAL: Drogheda have opened the scoring. Sean Brennan gets the ball across the line through a crowded penalty area as Sligo fail to deal with a quick corner and a inch perfect cross from Darragh Markey.

  • 45'

We're back underway as the wind picks up for the second half here in Sligo.

  • 40'

Third booking for Sligo as Radosavljevic is lucky to only see yellow as he unnecessarily lunges into a Drogheda player from behind. Greg Bolger has also been noted in Arnold Hunter's note book.

  • 36'

The best chance of the half from a set piece for Sligo Rovers. A corner whipped in to the far post had the entire crowd on their feet when Nando Pinajker's header went just wide of the goal when it looked easier to score. Referee had seen a foul in the play and signalled a free out.

  • 34'

Reece Hutchinson gets in the way of a goalbound effort from Draper after a great piece of work from Darragh Markey in the build up to the opportunity.

  • 31'

The first booking of the game goes to Lucas Browning for a foul on the half way line.

  • 29'

Finally an opportunity for Drogheda with Darragh Markey meeting a cross with his head. Can't keep it on target though.

  • 27'

Sligo continue to be the stronger of the two sides but there has been very little quality from either side so far.

  • 19'

Ryan Brennan is getting attention from the physio as he makes his way gingerly off the pitch.

  • 16'

Screams for a penalty from the Showgrounds as Frank Liivak bursts into the box and hits the deck but the referee waves away the protests for what would have been an exceptionally harsh decision on the visitors.

  • 10'

Sligo are looking the most likely to make a break through here but just can't find the quality in the final third.

  • 5'

Colin McCabe is the first keeper to be called into service as a cross from Reese Hutchinson goes dangerously close to the top corner. The Meath man pushes it over for the first corner of the game to the home side.

  • The teams are on the pitch in challenging weather conditions as the rain fall has been constant for the last hour or so here in the Showgrounds.
