Match Report

Drogs and Rovers finish all-square

Drogheda United and Sligo Rovers played out a 1-1 draw in an entertaining affair at ‘Head In The Game Park’.

The home side took the lead through a Chris Lyons goal, after a long free kick was flicked on by Daniel O’Reilly with keeper Ed McGinty in no man’s land, Lyons headed into an empty net.

Sligo equalised later in the first half, with a tap in from Johnny Kenny, who pounced on Walter Figuera’s effort that was only parried by keeper Colin McCabe and the 17-year old pounced first on the loose ball.

It was an even contest throughout with both teams having dominant periods of the game and decent chances, with neither side deserving to come away empty handed.

Drogheda had more than enough chances to score the winning goal and will rue the numerous chances that talented midfielder Killian Phillips spurned.

The biggest chance of the second half fell to Phillips, as a cut back found him with all the time in the world in the penalty box, with only the keeper to beat, but the 19-year old lacked composure and fired the ball over the crossbar.

Title chasing Sligo certainly didn’t perform to their maximum potential and missed their usual creative spark in the final third.

The biggest threat of theirs in the second half came from right winger Jordan Gibson who troubled the Drogheda defence at times, and forced a smart save from keeper McCabe at the start of the second half with a long-range effort.

Gibson looked to have picked out the lively Romeo Parkes two yards out from the goalmouth, but a vital interception by James Browne stopped an almost certain goal.

The result means newly promoted Drogheda move up to fourth on 11 points and if performances continue like this, Pete Mahon’s side will continue to climb the Premier Division table.

Sligo will see it as two points dropped as they fall to four points behind unbeaten leaders St. Patrick’s Athletic, who tonight cruised to a 3-0 victory at home to Longford Town.

  • Last year’s League of Ireland first division champions Drogheda have endured a mixed bag in their return to the topflight, as they currently sit in mid-table in fifth place on eight points.

  • Liam Buckley’s Sligo have made an impressive start to the season this term, as they sit in third on 14 points from a maximum 21 available.
