Match Report
Clinical Derry Overcome Cork Challenge
Goals at the end of both halves from Jamie McGonigle and Tiernan McGinty were enough for Derry to overcome a dogged Cork City 2-0 at the Brandywell.
It was a cagey opening to the game with neither side creating much in the way of chances early on as Derry looked to control possession while City appeared happy to hit on the break.
Indeed, it was the visitors who would have the first chance of the game on 15 minutes when John O'Donovan flew a volley over the bar from a well worked corner. Unfortunately for City, Tunde Owolabi would be forced after getting injured in the build up to add to their ever-increasing injury list.
Despite this setback, the visitors continued to dominate proceedings and hit the post midway through the half after good link up play between Substitute Cian Murphy and Kevin Custovic.
That was as good as it got for City in the first half with Derry finishing the half stronger with Jamie McGonigle proving to be instrumental for the hosts. Indeed, it was McGonigle who break the deadlock on the stroke of half time when he headed home from Brandon Kavanagh's cross to leave the Candystripes 1-0 ahead at the break.
City started the better in the second half and should have been level in the 48th minute when Aaron Bolger was put though one on one with the keeper. Unfortunately for the midfielder however he could only put his shot left and wide.
At the other end, Derry should have doubled their lead in the 55th minute but for Jimmy Corcoran making an excellent save from Jordan McEneff from close range.
Despite City's best efforts, their lack of squad depth was telling in the final quarter as Derry were able to empty their bench and looked comfortably in control down the final stretch.
This was before academy prospect Tiernan McGinty doubled Derry's lead on the stroke of full time to seal a 2-0 win for the hosts and keep in touch with Rovers ahead of the crucial fixture Monday night.

2-0 is how it finishes as Derry keep in touch with Rovers ahead of a huge game Monday night.
McGinty scores for Derry to make it 2-0 and seal the points.
Tiernan McGinty on for McEneff for Derry.
Derry looking to see the game out now as City struggle to create a meaningful chance.
Coll on for Connolly for Derry.
Daniel Krezic, Barry Coffey on for Ruairi Keating, Aaron Bolger for City.
City trying their best to get back into this but Derry look pretty comfortable at the moment and probably the more likely of the two teams to score again.
Kevin Kustovic is booked for a clumsy challenge.
City have been quiet in the last 15 minutes or so but that was better. Good link up play in midfield but ends with a wide ball.
Derry make a sub with Ben Doherty coming on for Ryan Graydon.
Good save from Jimmy Corcoran to deny Jordan McEneff from point blank range. Should have been 2-0.
Great chance for City as Aaron Bolger is through one on one with the keeper Brian Mahet but somehow puts his shots wide of the post.
Back underway.
First half complete with the hosts 1-0 ahead at the break. City will be dissappointed to be a goal down as they were the better team but Derry came into it towards the end of the half.
McGonigle strikes to put Derry ahead on the stroke of half time.
Three additional minutes to be played.
Jamie McGonigle does well to jink past a couple of City players but his resulting shot goes over the bar.
Better from Derry, firstly they go close from a well worked corner before Brandon Kavanagh flicks a ball into the box which goes just over the bar.
City hit the post moments ago, Derry really under the pump here.
Good chance for Murphy moments after coming on but his shot goes just wide.
Owolabi has signalled to come off after struggling for a while after initiallly looking ok. Cian Murphy is on in his place.
Tunde's up and running again so appears to be ok.
Good play by City who have had a couple of corners come and go . John O'Donovan manages to get a volley away from the latest one but it goes over. While that's going on, Owolabi is down getting treatment.
Game of few chances so far it has to be said.
Cagey opening but as expected Derry have enjoyed more of the ball in the opening few minutes. Both sides with a long injury list so will be interesting to see how the fitness levels shape up as the game progresses.
Game on.
