Match Report

Ten Man Waterford Hang On To Overcome Bray

10-man Waterford saw out a 1-0 victory at the Carlisle Grounds through a Cameron Cresswell penalty, who was the hero and almost villain for the Blues as he was their player sent off.

A third minute penalty was then followed by a succession of booking for the Waterford number 18, but a resilient Waterford back line saved his blushes and gained all three points.

For the second league game in a row, Bray shot themselves badly in the foot and gave away a penalty in the first five minutes. A shove by Conor Crowley on Connor Parsons was deemed enough to give the away side a spot kick and up stepped Cameron Cresswell who slotted his penalty cooly into the bottom left-hand corner to put the Blues ahead early on.

Waterford would continue to push for a second there after and came close a few minutes after their first when a powerful Parsons effort was blocked impressively by Sean Quinn.

However, things started to go wrong for Waterford as the half progressed. First, Cresswell picked up a booking for a late challenge on Omorehiomwan. Only five minutes later and the striker was then shockingly shown his marching orders. A long ball was headed down into Cresswell’s feet and his touch took him into the box.

Guillermo Almirall then collided with him and to most in the stadium it looked to be another penalty kick. However, referee Oliver Moran thought otherwise and gave the goal scorer a second yellow card for diving, much to the Waterford bench’ chagrin which saw manager Keith Long also booked for his dissent.

The second half was much dourer affair compared to the first, with Bray soaking up much of the possession but Waterford defending, and then countering, very well at times. Bray’s biggest chance came in the 55th minute, when a loose ball dropped to the feet of Darren Craven.

The Wanderers midfielder does like a shot from range, and he gladly took one here, a rocket left his foot, but it came crashing back off the crossbar and out.

Waterford goalkeeper Sam Sargeant had little to deal with all evening but the crosses and tame efforts he did have to deal with he did with confidence and ease. Bray looked uninspired and lacklustre in truth, not really throwing caution to the wind even when eight minutes were added on.

Waterford will be delighted with the win, especially considering the circumstances, and will now go into Monday’s rescheduled fixture at Treaty with a huge boost.

  • 98'

A corner is the last action of this game and a determined Waterford display sees them pick up all three points at the Carlisle this evening. Thank you for joining me this evening.

  • 97'

Phillips booked for stopping a throw being taken.

  • 93'

Final Waterford change as Perry replaces Atakayi.

  • 91'

Eight minutes added on here, don't really know where it has come from to be honest.

  • 85'

Nolan on for O'Sullivan for Bray.

  • 84'

A big chance for Waterford to wrap up all three points as Parsons lays off to Atakayi, but his tame effort is into Moody's arms.

  • 81'

Cantwell booked for time wasting with a free kick.

  • 79'

Another Waterford change with Akachukwu off in place of Griffin.

  • 78'

Davis straight into the thick of it as his looping effort is deflected wide for a corner.

  • 76'

Double Bray change, Webster and Davis on for Quinn and Lyons.

  • 62'

Quinn into the book for Bray as he drags Parsons down as he tries to break away.

  • 60'

Second Bray sub as Walker replaces Massey.

  • 58'

Sub Harry Groome booked for a lunging challenge.

  • 56'

Double change for Waterford as Baker and McDonald replace McMenamy and Power.

  • 55'

Huge chance for the Seagulls as Craven cannons a shot off the bar from just outside the box, with Murphy then picking up Bray's first yellow just after as Waterford tried to break away.

  • 53'

First real half chance of this half for Bray, Chris Lyons heading a Murphy cross well wide.

  • 46'

Back underway here at the Carlisle and Bray have made a substitution at half time, Harry Groome on for Crowley.

  • 49'

Chance for Omorehiomwan from a free kick is wide and that is the end of this half, Waterford the better side for much of it but the referee has taken centre stage for his sending off of Cresswell. Will certainly be a lively second half

  • 45'

    Three minutes added on here.

  • 36'

Keith Long also into the referees book on the sideline, Waterford feeling very aggrieved here.

  • 33'

Well what a half for Cresswell as he is now shown his marching orders for a supposed dive in the box, it looks very harsh and may well have been another penalty but referee Oliver Moran thought differently. 10 men for the away side now for the rest of this fixture.

  • 27'

First yellow of the game goes to the goalscorer Cresswell as he catches Omorehiomwan late.

  • 20'

Waterford looking much more likely to double their lead than Bray are to equalise, chances are piling on for the Blues.

  • 11'

Massive chance for Waterford to double their lead as Akachukwu cuts it back to Parsons whose fierce shot is blocked well by Sean Quinn.

  • 3'

1-0 Waterford! Cresswell slots the penalty into the bottom left corner which Moody dives to but cannot reach. Another poor start for Bray in the league again.

  • 3'

Penalty to Waterford. Parsons dragged down and up steps Cresswell...

  • Underway here at the Carlisle.

  • Two changes for Bray as Moody comes in for the ineligible Connor and Lyons replaces Feeney up front. As for Waterford, they make five changes from the defat to Cork, the most obvious of course being the injured Ronan Coughlan, alongside the suspended Idowu.

  • Good evening and welcome to the Carlisle Grounds where the heavens have just opened here but hopefully will ease off before kickoff. Team news to follow.
