Match Report

Waterford continue promotion push over Bray

A dominant display from Waterford gave the Blues a comfortable 3-0 victory over a struggling Bray Wanderers side this afternoon at the Carlisle Grounds. Goals from Richard Taylor, Phoenix Patterson and Shane Griffin has strengthened the Munster side's grip on 3rd place in the First Division.

Waterford started brightly and earned a string of early set pieces. After 16 minutes they capitalised through an Armando Junior Quitirna corner.

The winger’s excellent in-swinging delivery found Richard Taylor who managed to direct the ball goalwards under intense pressure from the Seagull's captain Hugh Douglas.

In the 28th minute, the Blues doubled their lead. A Kevin Knight foul 25 yards from the Bray goal gave Patterson a freekick in a very dangerous position. The in-form winger delivered a perfect effort to find the top left-hand corner, giving Stephen McGuinness no chance.

Bray Wanderers had an opportunity to get back into the game just minutes into the second half when Taylor was judged to have handballed while blocking a shot. Colin Kelly stepped up but failed to convert and his tame effort made for a routine save for Paul Martin.

Danny Searle’s side put the game to bed on the 58th minute mark. Sloppy play from the Seagulls in their own box gave Shane Griffin a chance to dispossess the substitute Jack Hudson and slot home.

Bray offered very little of a response as they fell to their 4th defeat of the season against the Blues.

Waterford were very comfortable for the final 30 minutes with the home side offering little resistance and looking like a team with nothing left to play for this season.

Shelbourne manager Damien Duff was spotted in the crowd as he looked to gain an insight into his FAI Cup Semi-Final opponents when they face each other next month. The Reds boss will have been impressed by what he saw from Waterford, albeit against an underwhelming Bray side.

Next up for Waterford is a home game against Cobh Ramblers on Friday night. For Bray Wanderers, it’s a trip down the M11 to face Wexford FC.

  • 94'

Fulltime! A well-deserved 3-0 win for a dominant Waterford side. Match report to follow.

  • 90'

4 minutes of stoppage time here.

  • 85'

Very little of note happening as the game ticks closer to 90 minutes. The Bray side seems resigned to defeat and are giving very little for the home crowd to cheer for.

  • 76'

A Dan Blackbyrne foul gives Pheonix Patterson a freekick in pretty much the same position as his first-half goal but this time the wall does it's job well.

  • 75'

The sting has been taken out of the game somewhat following that break of play and a raft of substitutions for both sides. The one positive for the Seagulls is Conor Knight has been positive since his introduction.

  • 68'

Break in play here as Paul Fox is down receiving treatment. Waterford make a double change with Larkin and Thompson introduced.

  • 64'

Close for Idowu! Shane Griffin is urged to shoot on the edge of the box but he sprays the ball to Idowu on his left. The midfielder does well to get a shot away but it is blasted over the bar.

  • 58'

And Bray are punished as Shane Griffin capitalises on sloppy Bray play on their own box. Hard to see the Seagulls coming back in this one...

  • 57'

Waterford have had a spell of comfortable possession. Zak O'Neill finds himself in the referee's book for a late tackle while trying to win back possession.

  • 49'

Missed! A poor effort from Colin Kelly means it's a relatively easy save for Paul Martin. Waterford still lead 2-0 here.

  • 48'

Penalty for Bray! Taylor is judged to have handballed an effort from Jamie Hollywood.

  • 46'

An encouraging start to the second half for Bray who get the first chance. Colin Feeney feeds Paul Fox in the box who narrowly misses the target.

  • 45'

Back underway here and it's one change for each side. Jack Hudson replaces Kevin Knight for Bray while Raúl Uche is introduced for the away side to replace Wassim Aouachria.

  • 45'

Halftime here at the Carlisle Grounds and Waterford takes a deserved 2-goal lead into the interval.

  • 42'

Wanderers captain Hugh Douglas goes into the book for a very late challenge on Richard Taylor. Patterson stands over the freekick but his cross comes to nothing.

  • 39'

Bray have been better since going 2-0 down and are working hard to press the away side. Still struggling to get meaningful service to Ben Feeney and Colin Kelly up front.

  • 33'

Bray Wanderers nearly get a goal back. Zak O'Neill wins the ball off Alex Baptiste on the edge of the Waterford box but his touch ahead of him lets him down. First real bit of work to do for Paul Martin in the Blues goal and he does very well to close down the 1 on 1.

  • 28'

What a hit from Phoenix Patterson! A perfectly struck freekick leaves McGuinness with no chance.

  • 22'

Chance! Kevin Knight makes a massive goal-saving block. Patterson, who has been excellent so far, bursts down the left wing and pulls the ball back to Aouachria. The Waterford striker hits it goalwards but Knight is in the right place at the right time.

  • 20'

The Seagulls have responded and have their first chance as Zak O'Neill strikes it narrowly wide of the post from outside the box.

  • 18'

Could have been two as the ball once again is put in the back of the net but Patterson's goal is ruled out for offside. Looked to be a tight call and Bray have been given another wake-up call.

  • 16'

Goal for Waterford! An Armando Junior Quitirna corner sees the ball end up in the back of the net. Not sure yet if Richard Taylor who wheeled away in celebration actually scored or it may have been an OG off Hugh Douglas. Either way a strong start from the Blues is rewarded with a goal.

  • 13'

A crunching late tackle by Roland Idowu on Zak O'Neill means Declan Toland brings out the first card of the game. No complaints from the young midfielder.

  • 9'

The first effort on target comes to Waterford's Richard Taylor. Not the cleanest effort but McGuinness is forced to tip it around the post. Corner is punched away by the Bray goalkeeper.

  • 3'

Phoenix Patterson looks confident and earns his side a corner as Conor Mc Manus intercepts the winger's cross. Hugh Douglas manages an unconventional clearance to put the set-piece behind his own goal.

  • 1'

Armando Junior Quitirna gets us underway for the away side!

  • The teams are out here at the Carlisle Ground and kickoff is just moments away...

  • The Seagulls come into today's fixture with fresh legs having not had a game since their 2-0 defeat to Treaty United over two weeks ago. While going through a difficult season and currently sitting 7th in the division, Pat Devlin will be hoping to finish this season on a high and avoid a 4th straight defeat to the Munster side this campaign.

  • While Waterford have already secured a playoff spot in their bid to get back to the Premier Division, this afternoon's clash is an opportunity to put some distance between themselves and Longford Town who sit two points behind the Blues in 4th place. With the cup dream still alive Danny Searle's side will have to remain focused on the league campaign today.

  • Just one change for the Waterford side that stunned Dundalk in the FAI Cup Quarter Final, Alex Baptiste replaces the suspended Timi Sobowale.

  • The teams are out! For the home side, there are five changes from the side that lost to Treaty United last time out. Daniel Blackbyrne, Kevin Knight, Hugh Douglas, Callum Thompson and Zak O'Neill are all introduced.

  • Good afternoon and welcome to FinalWhistle.ie coverage of today's SSE Airtricity League First Division clash between Bray Wanderers and Waterford FC. I'm Conor Paterson and I will be bringing you live updates throughout and a match report at full time. Kickoff here at the Carlisle Grounds is 3 pm.
