Match Report

Britton bags Waterford winner

Louis Britton was the difference as Waterford FC earned their second win of the season with a hard fought 1-0 over Bray Wanderers.

It was Waterford, backed by a large home support who had the better of the opening exchanges. Captain Eddie Nolan flicked over a Phoenix Patterson corner in the 5th minute. Not long after new signing Yassine En-Neyah claimed he was tripped in the box as he played a one-two with Junior Quitirna, but referee Mark Moynihan was well placed and waved play on.

The Blues continued their attacking display with Louis Britton going close on 16 minutes. The on loan striker who came into the side in place of Cian Kavanagh latched on to a clever through ball from Anthony Wordsworth, however his attempted lob over Michael Kelly had too much on it.

It was the dangerous Britton who opened the scoring 11 minutes later. Richard Taylor who was causing Bray problems down the left whipped in a low cross that Hugh Douglas sliced into Britton’s path and he made no mistake from six yards out.

Bray eventually began to get a bit of a foothold in the game, Keith Dalton’s shot not really testing Brian Murphy. The Blues keeper did well to smother at the feet of Rob Manley three minutes before half time, but was rooted to the spot moments later as Daniel Blackbyrne’s shot from 20 yards inched wide.

The second half was a very cagey affair until Ian Morris freshened things up with the introductions of Cian Kavanagh and Roland Idowu just past the hour mark, replacing the goal scorer Britton and Yassine En-Neyah. This injected fresh attacking threat into the Blues and it looked only a matter of time before they got a second goal with Eddie Nolan, Kavanagh and Taylor all going close.

As the clock ran down it looked like Waterford would settle for 1-0, as the Seagulls pressed to try and salvage a point. Dalton’s scuffed effort the closest they came but Murphy was alert as ever to get in the way of it. A few late corners for Bray gave the 2,372 strong crowd some nervous few minutes, but the Blues held out for their second consecutive win to go three points clear at the top of the table.

Waterford FC correspondent Brandon O’Callaghan has been supporting the Blues since 2002, and to this day follows the club home and away with his father, grandfather and best friend. Their “The Cally’s Have Arrived” flag has clocked up some miles, hanging proudly in whichever ground the Blues are playing. A football fanatic and goalkeeper himself, some may remember Brandon being on the books of Wexford FC (at the time Wexford Youths), as second choice goalkeeper during the 2013 First Division campaign. Nowadays he can be seen guarding the goal of Ferrybank AFC in the Waterford Junior League.
