Match Report

Coughlan brace helps Waterford down 10-man Bray

Ronan Coughlan proved to be the difference as Waterford came out 2-1 winners at the Carlisle Grounds, overcoming a Bray side down on their luck at present.

The home side took the lead in the third minute through their talisman, centre half Cole Omorehiomwan but a double in the second half by the first division’s top scorer won the game for the Blues.

For a side winless in three, Bray did not look like a side out of form and within the first 5 minutes, the home side had the lead. A deep corner by Joseph Power was towards a crowd of bodies at the back post, but the ball was met by, once again, Cole Omorehiomwan, as he headed the ball into the bottom corner with a late run.

Waterford were perhaps the better side for the remaining 40 minutes of the first half, with Connor Parsons having a lot of joy down the Bray’s right, but the Blues were unable to muster up any real chances of note, with the Seagulls hanging on to their lead going into half-time.

Bray could not have asked for a worst start to the second half as with just 7 minutes gone, Max Murphy entered the book for a second time and left Bray with 10 men, with two avoidable challenges in either half seeing him exit the pitch early.

A few minutes later and the Seagulls were finally punished for their sloppiness. A simple through ball from Niall O’Keefe split Bray’s two centre halves and played Ronan Coughlan in. The striker took his time and placed a lovely calm finish past McGuinness and to bring “the Blues” level just before the hour.

The away side now upped the pressure and with 15 minutes left, they took a deserved lead. Some lovely build up down the left ended with Ryan’s Burke looped a cross in on the by-line. It was the met by the head of Ronan Coughlan, who powered it home for his second of the game and 14th overall this season.

Chances continued to roll on in for the away team and they really should have had a third when substitute Christopher Conn Clarke blasted over on the edge of the box after a low cross fell at his feet.

Bray really struggled to get going in the second half, no thanks to being down to 10 for the most part, but they will have a chance to make amends on Monday at home to Treaty United. As for Waterford, they host Wexford before travelling to Eamonn Deacy Park to play an unbeaten Galway United.

Back underway here at the Carlisle for the second half.

  • 47'

That's the end of the opening 45 here, with Bray leading 1-0. Waterford have probably been slightly the better side since the very early goal was scored, a scrappy encounter in truth.

  • 20'

Corners mounting up for the away side as the pile to pressure on in search of an equaliser.

  • 15'

Parsons having real joy down the right hand side and he has put in a lovely cross that Dane Massey has to boot out for a corner.

Waterford have settled into the game having gone 1-0 down and they have just had their first real chance of note, with a tame Griffin shot from the edge straight into McGuinness's arms.

  • 3'

The home side lead! A deep corner to the back post by Power is met, yet again, by that man Cole Omorehiomwan to put the Seagulls ahead.
