Waweru Leaves It Late To Snatch Winner In Lissywollen
Cobh extended the gap between themselves and Athlone Town with a 3-2 win in Lissywollen tonight, as Wilson Waweru fired home late to take three points.
Liam Kervick gave Cobh the lead in the first half before Franz Pierrot equalised on the brink of half time. Matthew Leal made it 2-1 Athlone after the restart, before Pierce Phillips and Wilson Waweru both score in the final fifteen to flip the script.
Cobh spent the first few minutes on top and got the breakthrough in the 24th minute. Liam Kervick dropped deep and got the ball before driving at the Athlone goal with intent. He teed up German Fuentes Rodriguez before ghosting by him, leaving him in his wake. This move was followed with a nice finish and Cobh had the lead they deserved.
Athlone then got on top possession-wise but didn’t create many chances up until half time. The equaliser came on the brink when the main man Franz Pierrot stepped up in a time of need.
The ball found its way to Haji Abdikadir on the right-hand side. He sent a sweet ball back in and Pierrot headed it down and in, scoring at the perfect time to send the sides in at level pegging.
Athlone then started the second half well and were rewarded in the 54th minute. Valeri Dolia knocked it inside to Matthew Leal. His first touch let him down but the ball ricocheted off a Cobh defender and back into his path. He made no mistake with his finish, curling it in from a tight angle to give the hosts the lead.
Cobh then got a foothold on this one again and eventually equalised with an absolute wonder strike in the 78th minute. Wilson Waweru was played through on the left-hand side and he awaited the cavalry’s arrival. He played a lofted ball across the area that was controlled by Pierce Phillips, who hit it on the half volley, finding the top corner from distance. Another absolutely sensational goal from Cobh in this one.
The comeback was complete six minutes later. Phillips tried his luck from way out again and this effort was tipped onto the bar by Enda Minogue. The rebound fell to Waweru for a tap in, followed by jubilation from the Cobh bench.
Cobh extend the gap between the two with the win. Athlone remain in fourth however as Bray didn’t manage a win.
