O’Brien-Whitmarsh Brace helps Cobh beat Athlone

Cobh Ramblers overcame Athlone Town by a score of 3-2, in an entertaining game at St. Colman's Park this afternoon.

A brace from Beineon O'Brien-Whitmarsh and a strike from Conor Drinan midway through the second period sealed a vital win for Darren Murphy's side.

It was a slow start to the affair with neither side looking too comfortable with possession inside the opponents final third. It took until after the half hour mark for the first real chance of the game.

Jake Hegarty’s bullet of a header from a corner looked destined for the back of the net, but thankfully for Athlone, they had a man on the line to clear.

Second’s later Hegarty was involved again, this time flicking a long ball into the path of Conor Drinan.

The Cobh wide man couldn’t keep his effort down and he blazed it over the bar.

Ramblers did make the breakthrough with just seconds remaining in the half. James McCarthy’s cross to the back post found the dangerous Jake Hegarty. The Cobh number 10 guided the ball back across the goal and into the path of Beineoin O’Brien Whitmarsh, who kept his composure to guide the ball into the net.

Just second after kick off for the second half, Athlone equalised after a long clearance went straight over the Cobh defence. Glen McAuley showed tremendous pace to latch onto the ball and he made no mistake with the finish, placing it into the bottom corner.

The excitement continued and less than a minute after Cobh re-started, Jake Hegarty was fouled inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Beineoin O’Brien Whitmarsh smashed the penalty home to give Cobh the lead yet again.

Cobh pushed to extend their lead and it came just after the hour mark. Darragh O’Sullivan Connell went on a lung bursting run down the left wing. His shot was saved by Schlingermann, but the Athlone shot stopper could only parry it into the path of Conor Drinan who finished from close range.

Athlone Town did find a late goal when Harlaib Mbayo handled the ball on the line, denying Oisin Duffy a definite goal.

Stephen Kenny stood up and sent Sean Barron the wrong way to pull a goal back in the dying moments. It was a case of too little too late for Athlone and they remain without a win this season.

Cobh face league leaders Cork City next while Athlone Town host Wexford FC.
