Match Report

Cobh And Athlone Share Spoils On Leeside

Cobh Ramblers and Athlone Town shared the spoils with a 2-2 draw in St. Colmans Park tonight.

Luke Desmond and Conor Drinan gave the hosts the lead on separate occasions but Franz Pierrot and Matthew Leal got equalisers. Both sides pushed for a winner but to no avail.

Luke Desmond opened the scoring for the hosts in the 24th minute. Jason Abbott played a beautiful cross field ball that was knocked down to Wilson Waweru. Waweru laid it off for Desmond, who took his time, picked his spot and found it with aplomb. A lovely strike for the opener.

Somewhat against the run of play, Athlone equalised in the 32nd minute. It came from a corner they won after a ferocious shot at the near post from Franz Pierrot was tipped over by Lee Steacy.

The corner failed to beat the first man but Jamar Campion Hinds tried his luck from the second ball. The tame effort found its way to the feet of Pierrot, who turned and found the bottom corner to add another one to his impressive tally.

Cobh regained the lead at an ideal time when Conor Drinan scored in first half injury time. Like Pierrot, it came from an effort of his that was blocked after a lovely cross from Desmond. Tiernan O’Brien swung it in and Drinan rose highest to flick it with a lovely header.

Athlone started the second half better and equalised almost instantly. Just two minutes after he came on at the interval, Adam Lennon was played through by Aaron Connolly with a pass that left him one on one with Steacy. With the goal at his mercy, he smacked the inside of the post and will be disappointed he didn’t find the net.

The town did get their second equaliser of the match in fortuitous fashion through Matthew Leal. He got the ball in the middle of the park about 30 yards from goal and with no pressure on him, tried his luck. Steacy had what can only be described as an absolute howler, failing to catch a ball that was right at him, letting it go right into the net.

Both sides pushed for a winner with Desmond, Lennon, Jake Hegarty Pierrot and Liam Kervick all either failing to hit the target or being denied. The two sides can be pleased with the result as they both stay in the playoff places.

  • 95'

    Full time.

  • 93'

Kervick is played through and his effort just flashes wide! Almost a late winner.

  • 92'

Drills it to the bottom corner but Steacy gets down and gets it.

  • 90'

Free in from close range for Athlone... 5 minutes added on.

  • 88'

Velikin tips a Hegarty effort wide! Good save.

  • 80'

Campion Hinds plays Lennon through on the counter and he drags his eventual effort wide. Had Pierrot as an option.

  • 78'

Lennon has a shot at the back post blocked. Good chance.

  • 75'

Chance! It falls to Desmond in the box and he fires it with an acrobatic effort but Velikin pulls off a great save! Cobh on top since the Athlone goal.

  • 72'

Bit of argy bargy in the box. Ref gives Van Geenan and Waweru a talking to. Athlone were preparing for a Cobh free and it stemmed from that.

  • 69'

Abbott gets it in the Athlone box but his pass to Waweru is lacking. Waste of a chance.

  • 61'

Goal! Matthew Leal tries a speculative one from about 30 yards and Lee Steacy gets it all wrong and it goes in. An absolute howler.

  • 58'

Athlone on top at the minute, but have had no clear cut chances since the Lennon one.

  • 47'

Chance! Connolly plays Lennon in and with the goal at his mercy he hits the post! Should be 2-2.

  • 46'

    We're back.

  • 45'

    Half time.

  • 45'

Goal! Conor Drinan flicks it in from a corner and gives Cobh their lead back right at half time! Tiernan O'Brien with the delivery.

  • 45'

    One minute added on.

  • 45'

It falls to Desmond just outside the area and his shot is just wide. Clearly a danger from distance.

  • 32'

Goal! It's an equaliser and it's Pierrot! Campion Hinds fires a shot in from the second ball and it comes to Pierrot's feet and he turns and fires in! Against the run of play but Athlone won't care.

  • 31'

Chance! Pierrot gets his first sniff at goal after he turns and fires a shot at the near post, but Steacy tips it over! Great save.

  • 27'

Dale Holland plants him and receives a yellow. Could be the start of an ongoing battle.

  • 26'

Dolia kicks out and avoids a yellow. Lucky on this occasion.

  • 24'

Goal for Cobh! Abbott sends it out left, it's knocked in to Waweru, he lays it off for Desmond who sets himself and finds the top corner! Brilliant strike and it's a deserved lead.

  • 22'

Dolia is cog in the Athlone machine, essentially the link up between defence and attack for the visitors. Looks up to the task but Cobh have copped this and he's being surrounded whenever he's on the ball.

  • 21'

Big chance. Conor Drinan drops deep, collects the ball, turns and fires it goalward with his left. Smacks the inside of the post. Great play from Drinan, who couldn't have done much better. Very unlucky.

  • 13'

Cobh not shy to test Athlone with a long throw in. Clearly an emphasis on attacking set pieces in Shane Keegan's game plan.

  • 9'

Drinan is played in but can't control it. Cobh on top so far.

  • 5'

Chance! Tiernan O'Brien's corner is flicked just wide by Frahill.

  • 3'

Dolia is taken down bursting forward. Free in a good position for Athlone.

  • 1'

    We're off.

  • Minutes silence beforehand.

  • Teams are coming out. Kick-off in a couple of minutes.

  • Furthermore, the Westmeath Independent reported Wednesday that Gordon Brett has stepped down from the Athlone job. The news has yet to be confirmed by the club and there's zero indication as to who will be in the dugout for them tonight.

  • Tonight could have major implications for playoff places down the road. Cobh are in third, two points ahead of Athlone in fifth. A loss for Cobh could see numerous teams leapfrog them if results don't go their way elsewhere tonight whilst Athlone could drop out of playoff places altogether.

  • Cobh come into this one fresh off a 5-0 battering against Waterford whilst Athlone have back-to-back losses to their name. Both sides need a bounce back.
