Match Report
Impressive Athlone Dispatch Sloppy Cobh
Athlone Town made it four wins out of five as they defeated Cobh Ramblers 3-1 at St.Colman’s Park.
The visitors built on their impressive recent form by gaining the ascendancy early on with Cobh goalkeeper Paul Hunt kept busy.
Enda Minogue had an impressive opening 15 minutes of his own when he made an excellent save to deny Jason Abbott from a well struck free kick.
That’s as good as it got for the Cobh in the first half as Athlone began to dominate and took the lead after 18 minutes through Thomas Oluwa who finished off a well worked move.
Ben O’Brien Whitmarsh was the only bright spark in the first half for the hosts whose energy gave Athlone pause for thought, despite the lack of service up front.
After a quiet middle third, Athlone doubled their lead on the stroke of half time when Aaron Connolly matched what Darragh O’Connell did last week by hitting a superb free kick from 40 yards out to make it 2-0.
There was a more pedestrian feel to the beginning of the second half but Cobh chasing the equaliser, began to push forward.
Indeed, Jake Heagarty had the ball in the net for the hosts on the hour mark but was ruled out for offside.
As one goals was disallowed, another was scored at the other end three minutes later when Patrick Hickey timed his run well to smash home from a cross to make it 3-0 Athlone.
Ramblers boss Shane Keegan rang the changes as he assessed his squad ahead of the Munster Senior Cup Final against Cork on Monday.
One of the substitutes was Dale Holland who won a penalty in the 79th minute after he was fouled in the box.
Whitmarsh converted to make it 3-1 which could have been 3-2 moments later when Athlone had to clear the ball off the line.
This flurry appeared to reinvigorate the hosts who continued to lay siege to the opposition goal. Danny O’Connell had the pick of the chances but was denied after trying to walk the ball in.
Despite the late fight back, Athlone held on for a deserved win to move three points clear from the bottom of the table.
