Great Gaffney helps Shamrock Rovers advance

A brace of goals by Rory Gaffney, helped Shamrock Rovers advance to the play-off round of the Europa Conference League, after a 2-0 win over KF Teuta Durres tonight.

Goals from inform striker Gaffney in either half, helped the Dubliners book their place in the play-off round, where they will meet Estonian side, Flora Tallin.

In truth, the second leg became relatively comfortable for the Irish champions, the Albanian side made very little headway, despite trailing 1-0 from the opening leg. The Hoops had the better chances to score, as Teuta only orchestrated a single shot on target.

Daniel Mandriou had the first chance of the tie for Rovers, he hit a left footed shot from outside the box, but he failed to hit the target as the Teuta goalkeeper, Stivi Frashëri was scrambling to his near post.

The hosts should have scored the opening goal of the game in the 16th minute, The Hoops defence failed to deal with a cross into the box, with winger Taulant Seferi connecting with the ball, but he sent his shot over the bar.

Gaffney made no mistake when it came, to putting his side ahead in the 20th minute, the forward running down the left channel, following great build up by Liam Scales, he cut inside beside the endline before dinking the ball over the on rushing goalkeeper to the back of the net.

The remainder of the opening half was all Shamrock Rovers, the Albanian hosts were trying to create going forward, Lee Grace made a fantastic block to prevent any danger, but Teuta failed to test Alan Mannus during the opening 45.

Rovers had their lead doubled just after the hour mark, Gaffney with his second of the night, Scales again with more fantastic build up play, he played Gaffney through as the forward ran for goal, before he fired past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Alan Mannus was finally called into action in the 68th minute, the home side registering their first on target, a shot from distance stinging the palms of Mannus, but it was no major threat to the Rovers number one. It was a closed contest in the end as the Tallaght side advanced to the play-off round, 180 minutes from the group stages.
