FAI Cup Preview: Longford v St Patrick’s Athletic

It’s a break away from the bread and butter of the league as the Sports Direct FAI Cup gets underway this weekend. Longford Town welcome St. Patrick’s Athletic to Bishopsgate this evening. (6pm).

It’s been a mixed season so far for the Town. They were hit with injuries and manager Stephen Henderson had been unable to name his strongest squad for most of the games. When the transfer window opened he was able to bring in reinforcements. With the new players and others returning from injury Town have been unbeaten in their last three league games.

Last weekend they had to dig in deep to defeat bottom side Kerry. Gary Armstrong put the Town ahead with a stunning strike before the break. Just minutes into the second half Kerry levelled through a Leo Gaxha penalty but substitute Cristian Magerusan scored the winner for the Town. They finished the game with 10 men after new signing Bastien Hery was sent off minutes after he came on as a substitute.

St. Pat’s lie second in the Premier Division table. After a slow start and a change of manager they have been in excellent form in the league of late. They’re on a four game unbeaten run at the moment.

In their last league game at the beginning of July they drew 1-1 with Cork City. Jake Mulraney put the Saints ahead but Ruairi Keating equalised for City deep in stoppage time.

Their last two games were in the Europa Conference League. They lost both legs to Luxembourg side F91 Dudelange. The first league away from home ended 2-1 - Mark Doyle scored a late goal for Pat’s. On Thursday night they were defeated 3-2 at Richmond Park.

The Luxembourg side took an early lead but Pat’s were level on the night through an oqn goal. They went 2-1 up on 60 minutes through Adam Murphy which levelled the tie but the visitors replied with an equaliser seven minutes later and then they grabbed a third goal deep in stoppage time.

Both these teams exited the competition at this stage last year. Town lost 4-0 away to Dundalk while Pat’s, who had been the holders, were beaten 3-2 at home to Waterford.
