Match Report

Bohemians Secure First Home Berth In 2023 Season

Bohemians picked up their first victory at Dalymount this season with a 3-0 win over DLR Waves in an eventful Dublin Derby tonight.

Goals from Sarah Rowe from the spot and Erica Burke either side of an Isabel Finnegan red card for a clash off the ball with Burke all within seven minutes of the break sealed the points for the hosts. Bates Crosbie made it three as she came off the bench to tap home a rebound midway through the second half.

Bohs will be delighted with three wins from their first five at the quarter mark of their season as they go into an extended break now with the internationals to come along with their first bye week of the season. DLR Waves will look to regroup at home against Sligo in just over two weeks' time.

It was the home side who looked the brighter of the two inside the opening ten minutes, with Erica Burke proving a handful up top with some neat hold up play on multiple occasions but she could not help her team find an early lead.

The away side had their first big chance on the 15th minute mark, Eve O'Brien with a free header in the box but got underneath the ball and couldn't direct it on target to the relief of Rachael Kelly in the Bohs net.

Waves continued with another decent chance moments later, Lisa Murphy was forced into an incredible goal saving challenge on Michelle Doonan who pushed the ball past the onrushing Kelly but could not get her shot away despite the gaping net. Murphy did well to hold her up as when Doonan got past the Bohs netminder it looked a certainty that the away side would take the lead.

As we ticked towards the half hour mark the game was starting to fall into a little bit of a lull, understandably so after the flurry of early opportunities. Waves, having conceded just the single goal to Peamount in their three games so far, were looking comfortable at the back. Bohemians were looking at their most threatening hitting the wide flanks with Prior and Rowe looking lively chasing long balls in behind the back line.

Bohs took the lead just before the break from the spot. Katie Malone rushed back to try to intercept Sarah Rowe who picked up the ball free in the box but Malone was too aggressive in the tackle and knocked her down from behind. Rowe stepped up herself and smashed into the top right corner.

Things went from bad to worse for the away side moments later as Isobel Finnegan was shown a straight red card just five minutes before the break. Finnegan and Burke came together off the ball and Burke ended up on the floor with the referee showing Finnegan the straight red card to her absolute dismay. Finnegan and Burke went back and forth shoving each other and on the third shove seemed to have her hand slightly high, catching Burke potentially in the neck, Finnegan was immediately enraged about the decision and seemingly the players reaction to the incident but there was no changing minds for the official. The away side with an absolute mountain to climb to get back into this at this stage as they would just hope to get in level at the break.

Bohemians had other ideas though, as they pushed for a second goal before the break and got their reward due to some sublime moments of quality.. Burdis played a lovely ball down the left side to Rachel Doyle, who played a stunning ball onto the head of the inrushing Erica Burke, who had recovered from the blow that brought out the red card moments ago to rise up and guide the ball from 10 yards out into the side netting across Badana, doubling the hosts lead.

The second half was understandably dominated by Bohemians as they looked comfortable holding the ball playing against the ten women of Waves. Bohs made it three in the 67th minute of the game. Bates Crosbie poked home with ease having just come off the bench as a sub but all the plaudits on this have to go to Sarah Rowe who held off Waves defenders as they dropped like flies with Rowe driving into the area. The ball fell to Mia Dodd who struck well but Badana’s flying save ended up at the feet of Crosbie who scored within moments of coming on.

As the half wore on the frustration of the DLR Waves players was starting to show as tempers began to flare with tackles becoming more aggressive, the away side clearly feeling aggrieved after the red card decision.

Bates Crosbie should’ve picked up her second in eerily similar fashion as her first but this time the rebound ended up in the hands of the grateful Badana. Once again though Sarah Rowe coming in from the right causing havoc as her and Erica Burke seemed to be all over everything positive for the hosts tonight in Dalymount.

Waves did force Rachael Kelly into a big save in the final ten minutes with a well hit long range effort that Kelly met well parrying up and onto the bar and thankfully for her, behind for a corner.

Bohs saw the game out pretty well from here with Lara Phipps coming off the bench for the hosts and looking lively but they never really pushed on for a fourth goal. The Dalymount side will be very pleased with their performance against as Waves side who need to group and forget this one as they go again in a few weeks.
