Super sub Brierley delivers Waves win
DLR Waves were made work hard for it, but they managed to dig out a 1-0 victory over Bohemians in the UCD Bowl today.
It looked like the Waves would come away with this one having wasted large spells of possession but super sub Avril Brierley had other ideas, scoring the winner right after coming on.
There wasn’t many clear cut chances in this one, but the score-line fairly reflected how the full ninety went. The hosts controlled possession and had mostly half chances, the majority of which came in the first half.
Rachel Doyle, Carla McManus and Kerri Letmon were the main players. Letmon just before ten minutes in forced a good save from Courtney Maguire after lashing it goal-bound inside the box.
McManus then attempted to create a goal for herself in the 14th minute when she received the ball with her back to goal. She was up against Lisa Murphy however, who stood her ground well and turned the chance away. Several moments of good goalkeeping from Maguire and good defending from Murphy ensured the Waves were kept at bay. Doyle also popped up every now and again, but couldn’t get a clear cut chance.
Bohs did have one good chance in the first half, coming in the 20th minute. Murphy turned attacker and met a corner, with her effort headed for the top corner. Letmon returned the favour and headed the ball away on the line, a great piece of defending from the winger.
The second half started and the tempo was even slower. Waves still controlled the ball but were doing very little with it. It was clear changes were needed to inject some life into the side and that’s what Graham Kelly did, making a triple sub in the 69th minute.
This proved to be the right call as one of those subs proved to be the hero. Just under five minutes after the changes, Letmon dug out a cross on the right hand side and her low drilled effort met Brierley at the front post, whose touch bet Maguire and went in. A sigh of relief for the hosts, I’d imagine.
Waves had one good chance to make it two when Shauna Carroll met a cross in front of goal, but a bounce as she hit it seemed to throw the effort off. Bohemians never really looked like equalising however, which means the points go to the Waves.

Full time.
Murphy nearly scores from 45. It's saved and it looks like the hosts will hang on.
Maguire collects a Letmon cross and sets up a counter attack. Bohs win a free on the break.
Two added minutes.
Maguire fumbles a cross but a defender is on the spot to clear it. Bohs were claiming a foul, but nothing was given.
Shauna Carroll should make it two after meeting a well dug out cross, but the bounce came just as he hit it and her effort is over the bar.
Goal! Waves finally break the deadlock after Letmon's low cross is met by Brierley for a neat finish at the near post.
On the verge of the 70 minute mark, Kelly makes a triple sub. Presumably trying to add a booster to the team.
Letmon drills in an inviting cross, but none of her teammates meet it and it is cleared.
Decent counter attack from DLR Waves results in McManus playing through Cronin, but she is off balance with her attempt and sends it behind for a goal kick.
Rachel Doyle has an early second half attempt from a tight angle, but Maguire is behind it all the way.
DLR Waves get us underway for the second half.
Half time. Waves have had the majority of the ball, but haven't been able to make it count.
Kane tries a very speculative effort. Didn't even test Badana.
Letmon overhits a cross.
Cronin has an effort in the box blocked by Murphy.
McManus tests Maguire from range with a first time effort, but her shot is straight at the Bohs keeper.
Jessica Gleeson plays a lovely ball through to Rachel Doyle, who just can't take it under control.
Best chance of the game as Lisa Murphy heads an effort from a corner goal bound. Letmon pops up with a header off the line however.
McManus attempts to turn in the box but Lisa Murphy stands her ground well.
Clare fires one in from the right, but can't find anyone.
Letmon with the first big save from the right hand side of the box. Forces a good save from Maguire.
Doyle fires one across the face of goal. Not exactly clear whether it was a pass or shot. Either way, it doesn't produce a goal.
Not exactly bags of action in the opening five. The hosts are in control though and are slowly working towards creating chances.
Bohs get us underway.
The Bohemians lineup is in.
The DLR Waves lineup is now in.
Waves come into this one looking to break a three game losing streak, whilst Bohs are looking are looking to bounce back from their last outing, a 3-0 defeat to Peamount.
