Lucky 13 for Galway as Tribesmen keep gap at 10
Galway secured a record eighth consecutive home league victories through two Stephen Walsh goals in a hard fought 2-0 victory over Wexford FC in Eamonn Deacy Park this evening.
The home side didn’t have it all their own way though and struggled at times to break down a solid Wexford rearguard at times and despite dominating the possession and territory the westerners found clear cut chances hard to come by until Walsh found the back of the net twice in the second half of an entertaining game.
Wexford looked bright in the early exchanges with Karl Chambers and Kian Corbally combined but the Galway defence recovered well to stub out the first meaningful attack of the game.
Galway grew into the encounter and they looked dangerous along both flanks and especially from setpiece routines direct from the training ground.
On 12 minutes Conor O’Keeffe whipped in a powerful cross to almost put it on a plate for Stephen Walsh but a glance off a Wexford head was enough to thwart the danger and force the corner.
Regon Donelon and Ed McCarthy combined to create a glorious opportunity for David Hurley who’s effort went just wide of the near post.
The tribesmen almost got the opening goal when a long through was flicked on by Vincent Borden and Stephen Walsh just couldn’t force it home at the back post, a combination of Wexford players denying the on form striker.
There was precious little quality on show for the remainder of the first half as Galway were frustrated by the visitors.
That would change just ten minutes into the second period. Regan Donelon provided the inspiration for the hosts as the experienced defender burst forward, breaking into the box his cross was knocked out for a corner.
Donelon and Ed McCarthy combined for another training ground set piece routine and the Dunmore man’s looping cross found Walsh at the back post who forced it home to open the scoring and get the home supporters on their feet.
Fifteen minutes later the score was doubled as Walsh got another one. Another lung busting run from Ed McCarthy saw his effort deflected from a touch by Walsh. The ball seemed to bounce off the post and the keeper to cross the line and close the game out for the home side.
Wexford did threaten to pull one back but despite having a few half chances they really didn’t create enough quality opportunities to allow them to score.

And it\'s two. Stephen Walsh has added another goal. Some good fortune as Walsh gets a touch on McCarthy\'s centre and it seemed to ricochet off the keeper and the post to cross the line for the striker\'s 7th goal of the season.
Another fine Galway effort as the goalscorer Walsh tries his luck from far out. His effort is straight at Heffernan who deals with the threat easily.
The veteran defender Regan Donelon has just burst into his Galway United side into life. Firstly a fantastic run from the full back created an opportunity and his cross was knocked out for a corner. Another set piece through the Dunmore man sees his cross met at the back post by Stephen Walsh who heads it home for a much needed score for John Caulfield\'s men.
Changes have been few and fair between but a glorious pass from Borden finds Walsh in front of goal but his touch evades him and Heffernan gathers the ball gratefully.
No changes for either side as we get ready for the second half.
HALF TIME Galway United 0-0 Wexford FC
Galway are feeding off scraps here in the first half. They've been the better side, but have really struggled to worry Heffernan in the Wexford net.
A minute after having words with the referee Stephen Walsh finds himself in the box for an over zealous challenge on Dunne just in front of the fourth official.
Another fine cross from O'Keeffe sees Hugh Douglas and Stephen Walsh compete in the six yard box. Heffernan is lucky to see the header go well over the bar as he fails to collect the cross.
Great work down the left from Clarke finds Lomboto in space in the Wexford box. His effort is directly at Heffernan who gathers comfortably for the visitors.
Scramble at the back post. A long throw into the Wexford box is headed on by Borden who finds Walsh at the back post. A combination of Heffernan and the defenders snuff out the threat though.
A lovely set piece from the corner between Regan Donelon and McCarthy creates an opportunity for Hurley who just couldn't find the target from around the penalty spot. Directly taken off the training ground.
Conor O'Keeffe whips a ball into the box but Lomboto or Walsh just can't their head on it as it runs out for a corner of the head of a Wexford defender.
First real opportunity created by fancy footwork from Karl Chambers, he finds Kian Corbally but the youngster can't find the space to get a shot in. Galway eventually deal with the poor cross from the right hand side.
And we are off. Galway going for a record number of consecutive home league wins this evening.
The teams have been announced for this evening's game as Galway United look to continue their fine form at the top of the table at Eamon Deacy Park this evening.
